"He said building bridges to connect the islands is possible, and noted that the nearest point from Sibulan, Negros Oriental to Liloan, Cebu is just about four kilometers; from Cebu to Bohol - six kilometers, from Bacolod, Negros Occidental to Guimaras - 10 kilometers, and from Guimaras to Iloilo, less than two kilometers.

The longest inter-island connection through a bridge in the Central and Western Visayas regions would be from Siquijor to Dumaguete at 18 kilometers. This is physically possible because the longest bridge in the world spans around 26 kilometers, Remollo said."

He then goes on to say:

"Asked about funding, Remollo said the Philippines has plenty of money, with about P350 billion in savings as declared by President Benigno Aquino III in 2013."

I am taking it that this guy is not an engineer. I don't think 350 billion pesos would even come close to covering the construction costs....let alone the maintenance.

Don't think that would even cover the short distance from negros to Cebu, and with the 200-300m depth of the channel and strong currents out there, does this country have the technology for huge piles going down that deep, I doubt it!

If there was felt a need to improve infrastructure Im hoping they spend money towards that ever elusive maintenance stuff. For instance the National Highway ( source of pinoy pride..one would think anyways ) on the island of Panay about half way up twixt top and bottom. There exist a *hole*. This hole is a place a bridge belongs that fell down.. I have no idea when it fell down but the hole was there in 2009..that hole is still there and you have to go into the closest town cross one of their bridges in there..do more traffic etc etc...about a mile total. Takes about 20 minutes or more if you hit the town the wrong time of the day. This hole is only about 20 feet wide and the road is 2 lane. This is not a massive engineering feat by any stretch of the imagination..Yet its there ..for 5 plus years now.

On a different note..why is there *always*..err usually a space about 1-2 meters wide on both sides of a bridge ( usually ) that has no pavement?

Crap I'm sorry. I need to stop going off topic.

Yeah. Maintenance would be a much better use for the funds. I'm curious as to why this politician would think Manila's money would ever reach down to Dumaguete. That's for Tagalogs, not the second class Visaya citizens.

The way of the politician ..its natural..if somehow he could cause money to be sent to his area..he could dole out the sub contracting to the highest bidder of kick backs !

It took about 18 months to build the 30 metre bridge over the creek from Polo to Tanjay , could you imagine the time frame needed to do anything on a large scale , unless the work was undertaken by a foreign company . And the budget blow outs by the time the brown paper bag payments were made to everyone , which is why so much infrastructure is lacking , the money just simply doesn't arrive to where it was allocated . I suppose they could possibly get about halfway and then decide to call it the worlds longest pier.

Well thats it then isnt it.. They wont allow foreign anything do work here ..As stated.... its for keeping the money to locals...(NOBLE INDEED)... its just not doled out to the channels as one might think. (add your own list of bad distributions here). As a 3rd world nation will soon have the honor of the worst expensive electric costs in the world.. just like the worst international airport & (again your own list) ahh.. the sense of pride..

These things you just can not blame the reason on being poor..hey this thread started with a boast of having *extra* funds di ba?

If it was the worlds longest pier, wouldn't that be great for fishing
