It has been about a year since I was hit pretty hard and hospitalised with a stroke, so I will continue my update and lessons learned. I could call it, 'the good. the bad, and the ugly'.
Some of you have seen me walking with my BIL and my cane. The primary existing problem is my balance and control. I am surprised and disappointed that problem has not gone away. Also, my right arm, hand, and leg are pretty useless. As a result, I need help with shaving and showering and moving from one chair to another; hence, the bad and the ugly.. Still, it all beats being stuck in a wheel chair. The good is I have regained about 70% of my strength, thanks to a hard 90 minute workout 3 X a week at the gym. My blood pressure is very good now and is my cholesterol, thanks to meds and eating fish. I have beef maybe once every 3 weeks. My weight has stayed at 168-170, down from 192 at the time of the stroke. I fought away depression and self-pity, a key I believe in getting better. A positive never give up attitude needs to be constant.
In many ways it has been a long lost year of my life, but considering the alternative I am able to enjoy family and friends. My goal is to be able to walk through the mall holding my little boy's hand with no assistance; hopefully, in 6 months.
So once again I suggest the following: Get frequent check ups and blood tests, monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, do some form of regular exercise, keep your weight down, and eat more fish and less meat.
Be healthy and happy and enjoy life.

I will continue to forward this every time it comes around!
STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters.....
    S. T. R.
    STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

    RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and
    Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A
    SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
    (i.e. Chicken Soup)
    R
*Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke --------
    Stick out Your Tongue!

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is
'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

I had a minor stroke 3 weeks before my big one. Stupidly, I ignored it and focused on getting my boy into school. Had I gone to emergency at that time, I would probably be walking today. Very good heads up info Cletus.

I don't really know how the reputation works here to be honest , I was a senior member at time of changeover , now adept , it must just calculate the amount of posts etc. differently

    Pat

Pat , while we are on this , could you please describe the minor stroke , that was the possible warning , was it just feeling flaky or what , I just think it is pretty relevant , thanks.

Pat dont beat yourself up for not paying attention to the first signs.. we all seem to do it.. walk around with the *If it dont kill ya it makes you stronger* attitudes.. Paying attention and staying on top of it now will..as you say..make all the differences.. As you can see you have a lot of *fans*.. Hang in there boss !
