Windows 8 is constantly crashing on my Lenovo Yoga2 Pro. Every time it does it wipes MS Office and several other programs I have paid for off my computer. I'm fed up with constantly worrying about a crash on an OS that I have actually PAID for. I was keeping Windows for gaming but every time I play a game that puts a little strain on the system it crashes. Windows just keeps going in the wrong direction and keeps becoming more buggy with every OS they come up with. I have Linux Ubuntu on my HP Envy and have yet to have a problem. I'm going to give Linux Mint go on my Yoga2. It looks like a very stable and polished OS and the desktop environment looks more appealing than Ubuntu's. Here's to hoping that everything goes smoothly and it comes out looking like this:
I'm also a Linux user. I actually use Puppy Linux as I'm not into all that visual fluff. Windows should be okay though. It's likely a hardware issue. Have you made any changes to the system? Back in the day when I did tech support for Microsoft, bad RAM used to cause a ton of issues. Take a look at any hardware changes you may have made since you purchased the machine.
All I wanted was a stable OS that looked good and worked out of the box. I've had Ubuntu on another computer for awhile now and had no issues, There were some annoyances with the desktop environment for me though. Mint Cinnamon had better reviews. So far my only complaint is that the wifi range isn't as good and battery seems to drain a little bit faster. The crashes I was experiencing on Windows were mainly due to the graphics card. It would crash while I was playing games (mainly FIFA 14), after it restarted it would tell me I needed to install an update for my graphics card but the available update was not compatible with my computer....or card...I don't know, I gave up after the first 10 attempts. Then the computer just started crashing whenever I opened Chrome. After I fixed that the computer would freeze whenever the screen saver kicked on, forcing me to do a hard reset which would give me the blue screen of death some times. It would do that auto-repair thing and uninstall all my MS Office programs (which were officially purchased and downloaded from their website, no pirated crap). This last time I got burned bad when it crashed and erased my weekly report (along with MS Office) as I was sending it out in an email (from Outlook...which also got deleted). I got tired of fixing one problem and then something else breaking....or getting an update from Windows that broke something else. My other computer with Ubuntu originally had Windows 8 as well. It crashed three times in the first month. Loaded Linux and not a single problem since. Both of these Windows 8 computers were straight out of the box and I was the only owner. These were not some el cheapo McSaver computers either. Both were mid-ranged computers over $1,500. If I spend over a grand on a computer it better f'n work. I don't do much, I play a few games, browse the internet and send emails. Windows/HP/Lenovo obviously can't provide that. In my experience (as a user who just wants to do the normal things a person does on a computer) the only problems you are going to have with Linux will come directly after you install it. Once you get all the drivers sorted out it just works. You can leave it on for weeks and it never slows down, no viruses, a great support community, installing programs is much easier...it just works. (Just looked at the Puppy Linux, never heard of that distro......132MB ISO file?)
Windows 10 is out ? but i am not concerned... I use apple products... I have only an Ipad right now because the apple laptop I wanted was out of stock when i went to buy, so I bought an Ipad to hold me over and wait another year or two to get the apple laptop i want.... None of that windows based Laptops s to hold me over even if they are cheaper than my apple tablet...I later found out about Linux and met an apple service technician... He swore by apple and would never go back and also said he loaded linux onto his apple and will never go back on linux to OSX.... Still waiting on my laptop which i dont need yet and i may try linux.. Good thing i can run linux side by side with apples osx just in case i need to choose.... Now the laptops have enough gigabytes capacity for two operating systems or more and room for lots of apps and storage for files..
I got sent ios8 for Ipad for my Ipad built for ios7... So much started off very bad with ios 8 and then it got better with the added options ios8 brought over ios7... But still not completely sorted out during this first month debut for ios8.. luckily y the remaining problems are mostly in functions i hardly visit other than out of curiosity or unimportant doodling around
Thumb drives are large enough these days to hold an OS several times over. You can make a bootable live USB and try it before you install it as well. If you like you can dual boot both Linux and OS X....or triple boot Linux, OS X and Windows on a computer. Nothing saying you have to give up one for the other. Have your cake and eat it too.
