Maybe some of you with kids or girlfriends with kids have the same experience and opinions I have. Every single toy we have purchased the last 3 years has broke. Granted, the majority were inexpensive but a few expensive ones as well. I'm sure the root cause is, "made in China". With Christmas coming up, I told my boy he only gets one toy, he can pick it out, and don't cry when it breaks.
We saw a video on Dickie Toys, great offerings and collection items. Not sure if the company is U.S. or U.K. based but I would love to buy their fire truck. They look like they will last and hard to break.

X-wife had a kid. Have to agree that most of the toys here are cheaply made. I understand it for the cheap ones but the expensive ones (which I rarely bought) were of poor quality as well. Prices seem to be tiered here in the Philippines....in order of assumed quality/price:

    1. Filipino made
    2. Chinese made
    3. Japanese made
    4. European made
    5. American made
I don't know why their pricing is based off this, there are plenty of quality Filipino made stuff and plenty of crap American made products. Maybe it's based more off of the import cost. I have had several of the department store staff directly tell me which product is higher quality simply by the "made in" stamp.

I'm sure we all know that "made in" doesn't necessarily mean it was completely produced in a specific country. (Just look at Ford....aka "El Fordo" lol)

I shipped my Music and sound equipment from US with me when i was in philippines.. Among that was a few Microphones and at the least was a cheap radio shack microphone meant for podium speaking...
It sounded good and i was always telling people i bought it in USA Radio Shack for cheap but with good sound.. And then one day i looked to see if made in china.., It said made in philippines.. It still sounded better than any cheap Karaoke microphone i tried.. I even went to Unitop and Lee plaza sound equipment sections and i even saw a microphone just like i had but it was a bit off color and off weight and when i tried it, it was terrible.. Bothe had the same style and both said made in philippines.. One was bought in USA at radio shack...
I think there is US export quality and then all the rest.. Even China making top notch devices like Apple products have to meet the american standard, then when they do their own knockoffs it comes cheaper and often not as robust.. I guess these days they have gotten better at smart phones and computer devices...
I guess the Export quality wont easily be found in philippines when it gets a better price in USA or Europe..
Another thing was when i was in Central america where all the bananas in USA have listed as their source, i never found a banana on shelf in market or super market even at the fancy ones at the mall, never found a banana with nearly the quality of look and size that we have every where in USA.. They dont sell em to themsleves.. They market home grown or small farm variety.. They all tasted good and sweet unlike the bananas i always found in philippnes..

@tunji oluwajuyemi Several decades ago Japan used to be where China is now. Their products mostly cheap and poorly/quickly made. China has invested a lot of money in buying up technology patents. They already produce very quality products for companies around the world, it's just a matter of time before the high end products will be considered "Chinese Made". With that will come a very technologically advanced military industrial complex. (but that's a different thread)

Yeah i remember when Taiwan was the china after Japan moved up in class... Now Taiwan isnt even mentioned anymore because its moved up behind japan up with south Korea... That got china really inspired and moving.. China had a lot of neighbors to study... Hopefully china catches itself before falling over into its own cespool of environmental abuse..
Thailand is strange, its not really the industry giant but its got a class to it..But Honda cars made in thailand is a good reputation for thailands industrial ability.. I guess nowadays its not really about these countries own performance, its how well they adapt to other countries manufacturers moving in and hiring and training locals to do the job..

I have some friends who buy products from China and Taiwan, they have all but dropped China due to inferior materials used including re-branded products. One almost lost everything when his Chinese supplier sent him a batch of Solar units that were incorrectly branded and turned out to be counterfeit products, he was dragged through the Courts here and had to spend up big proving the items were in fact the units he had purchased as each and every one of them failed miserably. The other buys Auto Parts for a niche market and often the Chinese made items would not fit due to incorrect laser cutting and bolt holes etc being out. Both have now settled on Taiwanese products which are exact, precise and top quality.

I know of Australian products in the Auto Industry which are produced here, then repackaged as American made and sold back to us at a much higher price because it is "American Made". Much of the aftermarket Performance guys are awake to this, but strangely when the AUD was around $1.10 USD it was cheaper to buy our parts from America including the cost to ship them here than to buy here.

I was once told by one of the top knobs in Toyota that China can build the best quality products in the world, but it is our fault we buy rubbish from them because we demand cheap...

"Cheap is never Good, and Good is never Cheap"...

I agree with all of the above. All I would add is that irrespective of price - with very young children you can't escape the fact that the cheap toys available are quite dangerous and carry so many 'choking hazards'. My 8mth boy has wrecked several squeaky, rattly toys and ended up with the 'noise makers' in his mouth - it's a minefield! If you look for quality 'kite marks' like (E.U. USA UK safety standards) then at least if you buy from a reputable store you will get some degree of peace of mind. Never a guarantee, but at least the toys last a bit longer(ish). The only places I have found good quality toys are from international Malls/Stores in Manila, Bangkok, KL etc. The Made in China crap is just that - cheap rubbish. I guess that's why Wooden Toys are so popular? Painted with Lead-Free paint and hard to break - An export opportunity maybe?? :cigar:
