The reality is, in essence, there are no traffic law's here.. I had heard they put traffic light's in Dumaguete years ago but took them down because no one would obey them...Driver training does not exist here..Neither is there awareness of anyone else on the road...If you are new I suggest you "observe" for a while before attempt to enter traffic madness.

i will term the most successful driving technique here as "Survival Driving." Forget the rules that no one follows, forget courtesy because you will be afforded none back, just try to stay alive. The technique the locals used is "what is bad for you is good for me" driving technique.

Remember there are only "hits" and "misses" here, there is no such thing as a "near miss". No one really wants to be in an accident but they will intimidate the hell out of you if you let them. You can assume that the guy who hits you and wants to say everything is OK, lets just move on has no driver's licence or motor vehicle registration either. Take his picture before he escapes. Ride with all you attention on the road and sides of the road, but NEVER take a second look at the pretty girl walking along the road or you will be seeing her in heaven soon.

I can tell you it is worse being a passenger in a car than driving one here. I am still unable to drive so I see all the chaos going around me in addition to my BIL driver making slow and sometimes bad decisions. Lately I just bring my iPad and play Sudoku so I'm not watching the mess and raising my blood pressure.

This Country is a dangerous place actually, no matter if walking, riding or driving, if we want to be totally safe - " we leave" - simple......................lol:D

Oh I forgot - kidnapping foreigners for ransom is a popular activity..................:D

Well while I am at it I may as well be totally negative and go the whole distance and include - Typhoons and earthquakes.,..............:D

To sum up the road accident thing - the advice I have been given if involved in an accident is - don't stop, get the hell out of there...........

it is easy to be negative on anything in the world.. i have only been here for about 4 months and am now riding a motorbike for the first time in my life.. i have seen very few accidents in person.. only 2 and neither was in town but on the National Hwy.. motorcycles are dangerous anywhere.. here there are no traffic laws that are enforced so everyone is on their own.. many drivers are women and they are riding with one or more of their children.. they go slow and are always looking around.. this is a good way to travel.. if you go slow and are aware then you should have no problem.. the problems come when people want to go faster then is safe.. very hard to have a problem at 10 mies an hour and very easy to be in an accident at 50 MPH....

Rob I agree with you in most of what you say, but as a bike rider for over 50 years, I can say that sometimes driving too slow (especially as a novice) can be somewhat just as dangerous as going too Fast, at low speeds the slow speed wobble can be so very un-nerving to a following vehicle of any sort and their averting actions can cause an unnecessary accident. Many drivers here just do not know how to take avoidance action in safety ( Well as safe can be)

Example of not knowing how many motorcycle accidents there really are here, Sunday evening around 6pm on the bacong-valencia road one of the local scooter racing fraternity was practising. I heard him going up through the gears and then came crashing and scraping metal, next thing is police and local ambulance, found out after he hit a turning dump truck! Instant death!
No helmet, licence or registration,no one really knows how many incidents like this happen each week as it was never reported.

Dave, probably more than we will ever know. Life is so very cheap here, They all know it is a Big risk, So Evident when you see them Crossing themselves as they move Off.

So little traffic on the Bacong-Valencia road... it'd seem so safe to be doing some testing..

Best thing to do often is follow something bigger than you, even if it's a small pack of scooters.

"Speed can be good but not without a hood"
    "Speed Thrills but Speed kills"
" Always in a hurry. never saw that Lorry" Yet I bet it was big enough

Moral; Wanna race, there are tracks about OH! but of course there is not much Fun in that. I need to be a nuisance and kill myself R.I.P
