Moved your post to keep the other one on topic.

Yeah, the Brits had occupied Manila and Cavite towards the end of the Seven Years' War(I think?) as well.

The US didn't rule the Philippines like a colony. They started prepping them for independence shortly after the Philippine-American War. I believe they call that a "tutelage"? They basically copied the American government structure and laws but 300 years of Spanish rule made the corruption impossible to overcome.

I wouldn't say they have been screwed by anyone. If they were left to their own the islands would likely be several hundred separate micro-countries and be in almost perpetual tribal war. They certainly wouldn't be as developed without Western influence.

I think Wrye is correct in his thinking. The current government was influenced by some Spanish blood.

“I would rather have a country run like hell by Filipinos than a country run like heaven by the Americans, because however bad a Filipino government might be, it can always be improved.”Quote credited to Manuel Quezon. It has been speculated the Manuel Quezon had the talent and skills of Nostradamus  and may actually be very happy now as soon as the government starts improving itself.
However Manuel Quezon is not even 100% Filipino, he has Spanish blood. That is why he was fluent in speaking Spanish then in the 1920's and 30's. Since Manuel Quezon is not full Filipino there is no reason to accept the problems of the Philippines as Filipino.
The Filipinos can BLAME SPAIN......then blame it on the RAIN...!!!!... Today the typical approach would be: it’s got to be somebody else's fault...NOT MINE… or the standard approach of coarse of just denying there is a problem. So everything good about the country could be considered Filipino , and everything bad of coarse could be blamed on someone else.

I have been told that every counties that Spain had colonized has a big problem with brides. It is speculated that Spain did not pay their civil servants well so each one be used their entrepreneurial skills to develop their own income stream.... maybe just another rumor. .

The Philippines had a chance to be a part of the US or a territory (like Puerto Rico), but decided to be independent.

(this is written to be satirical)
