Well rice it a huge part of the budget here, three times a day for most Filipinos. The only things that are cheaper here is labor, and rent as I can tell, and I am not even sure about the rent because the house/apartment is not up the US standards, so although the price is less the value may not be. Landlords do not understand the concept of "preventive maintenance" or even fixing a problem if they get the renter to do it just by delaying the response. Labor is also cheaper but the quality of the labor is usually not as well trained, but they are not worried about working hard for a days wages, or demoing a building with rubber flip flops on either. It is a different world, here. If you are thinking of coming read as much as you can about it here, Connect on Facebook with as many people as you can, and read the blogs. It will help you transition to the culture a little faster. If you live in the metropolitan areas of Manila or Cebu, you most certainly will be paying the prices that are reflective of lower quality than the US, unless you are living in one of the urban very low quality areas.
The heart of the matter that many coming here don't consider is that we are on a remote Island and other than coconuts, fish bought off the street, and 5p bread at the bakery, most food items are shipped here and we pay for that. Btw, "out of stock" for those items you enjoy and buy is common. And a big And, the extended family hangs out at your place at meal time. Private education is also expensive here. Unrealistic expectations disappoint many who come here. Nevertheless, if you can manage your budget, it can be a great place to live.
Fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, rice, beer, and gas. Are all cheaper here than UK. Other than potatoes which are cheap as chips in the UK. Pun intended.
hmmmm....i get fresh fish here for peanuts compared to the prices in germany. besides from the industrial crap the supermarkets sell here, it is possible to buy fresh meat, fruit, milk etc from local farms and agro-corperations, not to mention the fresh market - if you choose wisely. if you prefer a romantic dinner outside, here are some very good restaurants not using msg. all in all, dumaguete is a great place. you can get amazing good food here for a reasonable price and live more healthy the same time. taking time for cooking a great dinner and teach your gf cooking great international cuisine is a welcome side-effect.
I forget that the prices (of just about everything) in Europe are ridiculous. It probably is much cheaper for those of you coming from there.
Just got back from shopping at lee plaza,..... g.f. was checking the prices of things...... shampoo, would you believe, is a hell of a lot cheaper buying it by the small sachet than the 350 ml bottle who would have thought it......350 ml. bottle p175.......84mls in the sachets p27 only in the phils....... buy the small packets in aus you would pay at least 4 times the price for the same amount
