Has anyone here used Alprazolam on their dogs to calm them down during the long flights to the Philippines? Any alternatives? I'm a little bit skeptical to give them these drugs though prescribed by the Vet after I took my 3 pups for foreign health certification exam this afternoon here in Texas. Anyone?
I brought two Persian Cats from the US almost 4 years ago. They were one year old at the time. It was recommended to me not to sedate them. I am amazed you vet gave you a perscription to sedate them. My vet recommended against it without me even asking. Dogs may be different than cats. I little research on the internet and/or a good vet should be able to explain the reasoning not to sedate for travel. I remembered the internet recommended not to sedate at the time. I did nothing for them in regards to sedation. They made it fine from Los Anageles to Manila. I gave them a couple of days of rest and to see if there was any trauma from the flight... none as I could see. Then they flew Cebu, then boat to Dumaguete. The boat was probably the worst part of the trip, as it was at night, they were in the engine open area with a bunch of roosters. That was probably a new experience for them. @luvdox
Do not forget you need to get a USDA permit also. There are services that provide it but I did it myself as it was a last minute thing. It was not big thing to do myself. No matter how hard you plan and schedule, everything is required to be done at the last moments to insure the pets are healthy on take off/arrival. I had to have chips in the cats to insure that the cat that a brought here matched the cats the vet has inspected. Good luck it will happen for you, but you may be the one who needs the sedation... I went on a dry run (without the cats) through the airport a couple of days early to have Philippines Airline check to see if the kennels were acceptable etc and get a better understanding of the procedures I would be addressing. The most rewarding part of the trip was to watch the homeland security man have to go through the cat liter in the' cat's kennels to insure there was no bombs in it. I wish the cats would have laid a bomb for him. hahahahaha @luvdox
I brought a small Yorkie L.A. to Manila about 7 years ago. The U.S. vet recommended against drugging the dog, saying it would not be necessary. We didn't and the dog was fine,
