The European Commission has warned EU citizens that they should close their Facebook accounts if they want to keep information private from US security services, finding that current Safe Harbour legislation does not protect citizen’s data. The comments were made by EC attorney Bernhard Schima in a case brought by privacy campaigner Maximilian Schrems, looking at whether the data of EU citizens should be considered safe if sent to the US in a post-Snowden revelation landscape. “You might consider closing your Facebook account, if you have one,” Schima told attorney general Yves Bot in a hearing of the case at the European court of justice in Luxembourg. When asked directly, the commission could not confirm to the court that the Safe Harbour rules provide adequate protection of EU citizens’ data as it currently stands. No privacy on a platform designed to tell the entire world what you are up to? Gee, who would have thunk it?
Google and Apple have been criticized by the government by making their encryption too strong. Which is absolutely ridiculous for the government to be complaining about.
To the list of people spying on you on Facebook o ahead and add your ex-girlfriend, old buddies from school, drama loving expats in Dumaguete...
You know, My last Employer ( Accountants) in Gibraltar had a section on these things on the Staff application Form. The HR Dept would then have a look at accounts of prospective applicants and glean what ever they could from the visit to that particular Site. even if applicants never admitted an account on the Social Scene, the name usually says it all JP
Seems a lot of these conspiracy theorists are over estimating their importance in the world. The vast majority of people are so insignificant to the government it is extremely unlikely the resources would be wasted on figuring out what they had for lunch yesterday.
The privacy advocates take the position that "I don't have anything to hide" is missing the point. The government shouldn't by default have access to all information.
I agree that there should be limits to what the government has access to.....but if you make your posts and personal information public on your profile(s) you should expect them to be, well, public.
