Thanks for the welcome. I always figured I'd wind up living in S. America, but after a dozen trips, I'm fed up with the violence. Visited the Phils 4 times and like it. Selling the house, and hitting the road in Sept.

I plan to rent, probably in Valencia, for 6 months. I'm single and will use Duma as my base for more exploring. After the first half year, who knows? :-)

MJ, you may know this; Cotabato is on the high risk areas for foreigners. Terrorism and kidnapping are a real threat in that whole area.

Thanks for the warning, I do know about Cotabato. One day not long ago my girlfriend chatted to me that she was frightened. I asked her why and she said gunfire all around the village - how nice.

I'll be looking for a rental in Valencia. Recommendations?

    Thanks - MJ

I've only stayed in hotels, but priced Apts in Baloy Beach. $300 / gets a nice, secure place with normal amenities (ac, hot water, kitchen). I'm looking for first base and can poke around after I have a place to sleep.

    Thanks - MJ

I'm not sure of any hotels in Valencia. Maybe there is a B&B. My landlord has some newly built apartments in Valencia near the town proper that might be open in September. The price would be around $300 for short term leases if I remember correctly.

Are you moving here from Barrio Barretto?
