The Chinese navy issued eight warnings to the US P8-A Poseidon, the US military's most advanced surveillance aircraft, when it conducted the overflights on Wednesday, according to CNN, which had a team on board the US aircraft. China is overstepping by building a base in the South China Sea. The US was just dropping in to say, "Hey, we see you there. See this plane? It means we have a carrier group nearby that could erase your little base from the face of the earth if we wanted to." China and the US will not go to war. Too much would be lost for both countries.

The P8 is based on a Boeing 737, they don't land on carriers. These are the replacements for the P3 Orion which the US Navy had when I retired. I believe they do carry enough armament to make a mark though should it ever be necessary.
