A male student killed multiple people at a shooting today at a community college in Roseburg, Oregon, authorities said.

The shooter is now dead, police said. The shooter's identity has not been publicly released, though Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced that he was 20 years old.

Gov. Brown’s spokeswoman Kristen Grainger confirmed that the shooter was a student at the school.

Grainger also said that the number of fatalities and injuries totaled 20 people, but would not specify how many were dead and how many were injured. Neither the sheriff's office nor the governor's office or the state police would specify the number of fatalities, though earlier today State Police Lt. Bill Fugate who spoke to ABC affiliate KATU that at least seven people were killed.

What is wrong with kids and young adults in the US? Parents and teachers need to learn how to better identify mentally ill kids.

It's all over the major news networks.

So far, the report is 10 dead (so far) at this Community College (three hours from where I live), 20 wounded (some critical) - shooter is dead.

4 weapons recovered (3 handguns - one long gun).

VERY small community - 25,000 population. Police took out the shooter very quickly - within minutes of arrival at this multi-building college complex. As soon as they found him, they immediately took action to bring him down so he would not kill/injure any more.

Not much is known about young, male shooter - no info released to public yet. Reports are coming out that he may be recently relocated from somewhere else in the country.

Motive unknown at this time - name of shooter not being released. Possibly white male in early 20's - possibly not even enrolled in the college - instead, a possible "walk-on".

I think the internet has played a vital role in breeding mental illness. It allows people to talk to other mentally ill (or challenged) people to build on their delusions on hate/conspiracy forums and chat rooms. The "media" is also partially to blame by glorifying these shootings and giving these shooters their 15 minutes of fame....or more like 1 week of fame since it's pretty much nonstop coverage for that long regardless of how much real information they have. The media politicizes these shootings and brings on their "experts" to babble on about what they "think" the shooter was like and what happened for nothing more than ratings. The media should be ashamed of the way they cover these shootings.

It does make you wonder how a student just walked into a school with a pistol and a long arm as was mentioned in the news report!
I though gun laws were pretty relaxed here but the U.S. Seems to be far worse, how long will the U.S. Carry on letting this happen?

Different culture. Guns won't be banned any time soon in the US. Even with guns being everywhere in the US your chances of getting shot there is extremely slim unless you live in the ghetto....or you shoot yourself (suicide makes up about half of all gun "violence" in the US). Vehicles, alcohol and obesity are far more dangerous than guns ever have been in the US.

City of Chicago has some of the most stringent gun laws going....50 shootings this last weekend. More people died/were injured in motor vehicles than by guns this last year. Ever checked how may kids drown in toilets/buckets each year? The Internet/media/video games feed weak minds looking for a "cause." and glory.

Trivia: The right to bear arms was put in by the founding fathers to insure citizenry protection from government gone bad.

Seems like the mass shootings of the past 15 years and the massive loss of life of school children, theater-goers, mall shoppers, and college kids might be enough blood spilled where we can have better gun laws in place to keep these crazy, mass-shooters at bay.

The VAST majority of gun owners are responsible and practice safety. But I don't think every American is capable of responsible gun ownership and steps can be taken to screen first-time gun owners (like the crazies) from gun ownership.

I mean, a person can't get a driver's permit without at least passing a vision test.

Can't we find some sane balance in this gun ownership thing?

Some sort of basic, prerequisite that will slow down the crazy people from having a deadly mass-killing weapon?

5% of the world's population (the USA) owns over 40% of the guns worldwide.

So about this very small percentage of gun users who needlessly mass kill like this - can't we find a sane way to eliminate some of them from gun ownership so as to slow down these mass murders by gun?

New laws are sometimes the answer to certain things but don't feel any law would help here. "Prohibition" didn't stop drinking just like laws on age requirements don't stop underage drinking. Very strict drug enforcement laws haven't worked either. Food for thought: selfies and videos of crazy stunts are rapidly on the rise for "individual" recognition. Mass shootings, have become a fad of sorts and a sane man on date of purchase can easily become not so sane the next day. The answer? I don't honestly know, I can say though many things that some of us used to think were wrong are now socially acceptable....i.e., there was a time when a male wouldn't use the "F" word in front of females...now the females use it. Rap music? A culture in decline of what used to be immoral and unacceptable. Maybe a huge ad campaign without political correctness on how wrong mass killing or any killing is...and how "stupid" it is. And we seem to, lately, turn the shooter into a victim vs the criminal they are. All I can say is I'm glad I lived the majority of my life during the time period I did.

Guns are not WMDs (describing them as "deadly mass-killing weapon" is an attempt to call them a WMD). We shouldn't treat them as such. Slowing them down does not stop them. We need to look at the causes for these shootings. I think allowing some teachers/school administrators to conceal carry (with extensive background checks and training) would discourage many would-be shooters...or at the very least limit the amount of damage they could do. But that doesn't address the actual cause of these shootings.
