The truck apparently doesn't get up to were we live, Dave. At least I've never seen it up here. Furthermore, our situation is different: You are responsible for 4 households (when all is rented out) wheras I am a renter and do not feel the responsibility for organising garbage collection for the landlady. That said, it still doesn't negate the need for those darned plastic bags because I cannot see us 'storing' a week's worth of unpacked garbage in a drum here. I remember when we were still living 'at home' we used large plastic bins of different colours for different types of garbage. Especially the one that was supposed to be used for peelings, food remains etc. would stink sky-high and would occasionally show hordes of maggots and other creepy crawlers in the summer, and it's a lot cooler there than here. If you would use any (plastic) packaging or wrapping you could be fined if you were found out...

Does the landlord not have a trash collection point or dumpster on the property? I have never rented a place that didn't take care of trash collection, though some had an added fee on the rent for it (in the US).

They used to collect it in an old oil drum and burn it occasionally, but that no longer happens (haven't seen anything burning for over a year). I deposit our full bags in the rusted drum religiously and when I have reached the top I inform the helper it's overflowing. Next day the drum is empty. Plastic and glass are apparently removed as the stack against the real wall of the property (out of sight, out of heart) continuous to grow. What they do with the garbage is (still) a big question for me..

Have you ever spoke to the landlord about the problem? What did he/she say? I've never actually spoke to my landlord about our trash...and in all honesty I have only taken the trash to the "collection point" on the property once....and that was because my girlfriend wasn't at home for a couple days....and there wasn't anyone else around I could give a couple pesos to to do it for me....and I only did it because the dead rat I found in the plastic bag smelled really bad.....and even then I had to look around pretty hard to find it. I really don't know what my landlord does with the trash, I just know it's far enough from my door that I can't smell it and it doesn't get large enough for me to even notice it's there.

I am working in Taiwan right now, and they also charge for plastic bag, doesn't really seem to slow it down much. But there a few the bring there own bags. but the stores give you a box to place your purchase into if you want to.
