Filipina Arrested for Duping Belgian National in Cebu City – Philippines Lifestyle - Philippines Lifestyle

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Office of the Cebu City Prosecutor has indicted Filipina Alamarie Mabasa for estafa (also commonly known as swindling).

Mabase is accused of duping Alexander Schick, a Belgian national, into sending her money by pretending that she applied for work abroad – she also told the foreigner that she was undergoing medical treatment in 2013, asking for money for her bills.

“It would appear that the intention of respondent (Mabasa) in telling fabricated tales was to take advantage of complainant’s trust and brotherly affection,” the resolution noted by city prosecutors.

Mabasa is charged with violation of Article 315 of the Revised Penal Code and is currently in jail on 60,000 pesos bail.

Schick filed the estafa charges against Mabasa who he met on Skype in April of 2013 – Mabasa worked as a sales agent for Schick who owns an online ticketing business.

When Schick came to the Philippines in May of 2013, he and Mabasa became close friends – that’s when Mabasa closed in on Schick and told him of her numerous problems including family, health, personal and financial problems she was having.

The accused then asked money from Schick, who sent money via money tranfers.

She then asked the foreigner to send her money for her medical treatment and also for her new job in Taiwan.

In all, Schick sent her 155,660 pesos, or approximately $3620 (USD).

But in January of 2014, Schick became suspicious of Mabasa’s stories – he attempted to verify her so called ‘conditions’ with her friends.

The Belgian later discovered that Mabasa never left the Philippines, nor did she undergo any medical treatment.

Schick sent Mabasa a letter, demanding the money be returned to him – a certification from the Bureau of Immigration Manila confirmed that Mabasa never left the Philippines.

Prosecutors also found that Mabasa’s former friend, Marissa Paner-Alferez, also signed an affidavit stating that Mabasa also collected payments from her clients without her authority – Alferez says Mabasa was running errands for her business as a wedding planner.

Cebu City prosecutors said “It was a scheme to extract money from (Schick), who unfortunately parted with his money.”
