IMO most of what you need to know is learned in kindergarten with the exception for those that would be attorneys, doctors, accountants etc.
School is primarily to teach students how to be employees and/or soldiers. Very little of what we learned in high school is applicable to real life or was already learned in the early years.
I don't know of any schools that teach kids how to be the boss or the employer. Even MBA programs train their students to be employees hence most go to work for large companies. An MBA does not prepare one to start their own business...yes they will learn some of the things they need to know but not all by any means.
I know this may ruffle some feathers because we are all taught to "go to school, get good grades so you can get a good job."
I know of several people that have large student loans they used to get worthless degrees such as ballet, $130,000 loan. Art, $45,000 loan, Psychology $75,000.
I used to own a company that fabricated and erected large steel buildings in US. We would occasionally buy a building from a company that fabricated large buildings. My salesman and I were talking one day and he made a comment about having a degree in chemistry. He told me he was a chemist for 12 years but could not make enough money to send his own children to college so he changed occupations to being a salesman, (no degree required but lots of other learnable skills), where he could easily earn enough to school his kids.
Many other instances but won't go there now.
We are taught how to EARN money but not how to invest or spend or budget or prepare for retirement. We aren't even taught the history of money or the definition of money at least in part because the teachers do not know these things. Of course it is not in their curriculum either.
May rant for the day....at least I hope there is not another. :stop::stop::stop:

My g/f is finishing her 2nd year in Criminology. Last week the History class separated into groups in order to complete projects. Apparently they were suppose to build house back in their early history. My g/f and her group bought popsicle sticks and a glue gun. They glued a house together. The teacher said he forgo any exam if they finished their projects. My g/f enjoys school so that's a good thing.

I am able to speak with her about the subject as I have a Masters Degree specializing in Criminology. But I can tell you that the way they do things here are not always like the way they are done in Canada.

I worked as a Parole Officer in Canada. One office I worked in had an officer that was from the Philippines. He told me that he was allowed to immigrate to Canada because of his beliefs (whatever they were?). You need to have at least a Bachelor Degree to be Parole Officer in Canada. They accepted his degree with no problem! He was not the most capable officer I had worked with. I think they have tightened the criteria nowadays.

The bottom line for me is that my g/f is content with school and learning new things. She doesn't go to disco and doesn't smoke or drink. If this makes her happy I am all for it.

One last thing, she is starting to get interested in what goes on in the world besides Facebook. She is learning about politics, biology, finger printing, blood analysis, economics and history and so on and looking at current issues with some skepticism. She is asking some pretty good questions about the world we live in.

One last thing, in her course she is given some hands on training. This is something I never experienced in my studies. She has been able to visit the jail here and next week she will firing guns at a live round range. They also train them in Martial Arts.

    Just my two cents!

While there are a lot of degrees that are completely worthless there are plenty out there that society really needs. Nursing, engineering, IT, electronics, finances and teachers to name a few. Even chemistry is a much needed study (even if one guy couldn't find a good paying job with the degree).

That's very true. There are lots of degrees that have little value in terms of earning big money. I know that in Canada having earned a degree in anything shows that you have dedication and the ability to learn. It is not so much the degree in itself. And, I would argue that most colleges in Canada have added more value in their degrees as they have "hands on learning." When you are finished you actually have work experience.

I have to say that although I do not rate the Criminology Degree here on the same level as the degree I earned at Simon Fraser University. However, here there is a practicum component which is very valuable. These students do on the job training which is part of their studies. I did something similar in Canada as a volunteer.

In terms of IT professionals, I have had many of them apply for work when I was doing my SEO here. They had terrible English speaking skills and were being taught skills that were outdated. I had students working for me from a few schools as a practicum course also. They were pretty useless and needed guidance all the time.

In the end, we do agree that the things being taught could be stepped up a notch.

With the propensity for OFW's being the only ones who can find decent salaries, I would suppose that trades like certified welder, plumber, or construction electrician would be well compensated in the World's "oil patch" and have much more of a demand for employment

The US is at least still a half century ahead (if not more) of the Philippines and the "kids these days" are better at almost every subject then the generations that preceded them. If the US these days is just a c*nt hair away from being pathetic then that doesn't say much about the generations that came before them.

The "oil patch" has about 250,000 layoffs this year along with more on the way as it costs at least $60 a barrel to produce shale oil.....so at $40 a barrel....let me see where did I put that calculator Wrye was talking about. :arghh::arghh:

I have taken many classes at the local community college. In many of these classes I sit and listen to the ignorance that comes out of the public school system wondering how some of my fellow students know to even turn their heads down when it is raining in order to keep from drowning. One of the students in a class that I am taking made a discussion board post about persuasion. He stated that an example of the positive use of persuasion was Martin Luther King persuading Lyndon B. Johnson to sign the Civil Rights Act of 1965. He went on to state that this amendment to the Constitution gave black people the right to vote.

I responded to him and asked if I could see a copy of this mysterious Civil Rights Act of 1965, I was aware of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, but not this wondrous amendment to the Constitution that he spoke of. I also asked if the 15th amendment which removed the color barrier for voting, which was passed almost a hundred years (1870) prior to this alleged amendment could be what he was speaking of.

He has not spoken to me since, and he also failed his pre-calculus class. I think that tlrtraveler is right.

And people at a college level need to be taught that there is a positive use for persuasion? I thought common sense was something you were expected to learn outside of the education system.

On a side note: My gf did come to me with some study material last night and I had to say, "Nope, nuh-uh, get away from me with that crap. (maybe I can show you how to convert numbers into different bases again?)"........I absolutely despise English (specifically rules on grammar). My gf started naming off all these different types rules/types of/for noun, verbs and adjectives......sounded like they were just making crap up. I think the only reason my English teacher passed me was because he didn't want to have me in class for another year. (He did just give me the lowest possible grade that would allow me to graduate.......and it was very apparent for many years that I was a complete idiot when it came to spelling and grammar, thankfully someone came around and figured out how to put spell check on browsers and cell phones.)
