I suspect finding a rental would not be a difficult task, finding one I can trust on the other hand I assume is a different story all together. Never been in that particular rental market and no plans to start now. Leaves me to find a place on my own or perhaps hire someones helper/gf/wife to assist. If the long nose surcharge is double then 500p for a couple days is more than worth it.

So for myself, being a FEMALE "Long Nose", how do I avoid this racist surcharge?

Do I need to get myself a G/F or Wife first? lol

(Not that THAT'S legal in the Philippines)....

Since I'll be a single, older, retired woman without a husband or child in tow, my housing priorities are safety/security AND excellent (reliable) internet reception close to Silliman U.

Wonder what the rent will really be. Two bedroom unfurnished or furnished. Capable of having a washing machine -

lol Anyone can hire a local to "negotiate" prices for them.

Personally, I wouldn't pay anything more than P18k ($380 USD) a month to live in Dumaguete. Anything more than that a month for rent and I'd just rather stay in a smaller town in the US and go to a community college. There is absolutely no value in getting an education here above that price....unless you are just set on going to school in a different culture.

As for getting a place capable of having a washing machine: pretty much anywhere that has an outlet here is "capable". When you see the washing machines available here you will laugh. It is nothing like the washing machines you buy in the US. Mine is completely made out of plastic.....and to fill the thing up with water there is a garden hose attached to the top (which has to be manually turned off and on at the faucet). But with that being said, I bought mine 4 years ago and I have had no problems with it aside from drain hose being chewed up by rats trying, and succeeding, to get into the house. I have to say that the $150 USD I spent on the thing was well worth it (not that I have ever used the thing other than showing the helper how to operate it).

I rented a new 3-bedroom townhouse this past weekend for 10,000p a month and opted to furnish it out of Lazada (crazy pricing), Citi Hardware, Mandaue Foam and will use a local manufacturer for rattan furniture for the place. I bought a refrigerator and washing machine. Getting anything delivered is quite easy.

Oh, there was no Kano (foreigner) tax involved. No negotiations. Everything was professional. There's actually 1 unit available now that's never been lived in. I sent you a PM about it.

Same here...not a wealthy expat, but we live in Tagbilaran right now (for almost 3 years). Would like to find a nice, clean 2 bdr, unfurnished house or apt in a quiet area, preferably around Valencia/Bacong. Prefer to keep rent no more than 12K per month. No kids, no pets...just a retired US guy looking for a quiet place without smoke for me and my gf. Am flexible for move-in timing...1 yr lease ok. Appreciate any help with this....
