When I contacted these people 7 months ago they quoted me 25K a month to rent a car for 3 months. I did not actually do it but I thought you may be interested Safe Ride Car Rental and Tours
Actually, I thought 25K a month was fair because there are so many advertising 2,500 a day (give or take) and considering a motorcycle might cost you (250 x 30 =) 7500 a month the car is proportional to that. But who knows, maybe there are expats on the forum who would rent out their cars for less?
Setup a reservation for a car rental using email with Safe Ride Car Rental in Dumaguete. I inquired about renting an automatic small car and the guy got back to me via email quickly about the availability of a Toyota Vios. We exchanged a few email and he stated that the rental rate would be 2,500p a day. I found the price to be quite inflated and then checked their website where it showed 2,300p a day. Calling him on his bluff, he just came back and said that the 2,300p a day is the discount price. Finally agreed to rent the car for a week and headed over to find them on Alapacoa street. I earlier had asked if they were located East or West of Real Street (National Highway) and he responded East. I asked him for further directions and he said across the street from St. Andrews Cathedral. Couldn’t find St. Andrews Cathedral on Google Maps, but went East and found nothing that looked like St. Andrews. Finally called the guy and he really couldn’t give me good directions. Turned out he was located West of Real Street! Looked over the rental car and it looked oldish. Dings, scratches and dents all over the car. I cataloged the damage with my cellphone and the rental agent also annotated the car damage on his form. I’d asked him earlier if he accepted credit cards for payment and he stated “yes”, but when I tried to use my credit card, he stated that his dongle on his phone wasn’t working and he wanted cash. Ended up going to get the cash and renting the car. Found out that the shocks were worn out and the car was very basic, yet clean. Wipers also were worn out, so the rain the other day was a nuisance. Would I rent from these folks again? Not if I had any choice in the matter. I was tired of risking life and limb on my rental scooter every day, so really wanted to get further out of Dumaguete and see what the mountains and such were like.
Almost forgot, the 7th day was free, so paid 6 days up-front, along with the 8,000p security deposit.
I usually rent a car locally here in Banilad for around 400 a day. Thats a long term rental for over 3 months. Yes its an old car but its a good runner and getting it from a mechanic I dont have to worry about any problems getting fixed.
A year and a bit ago I went to Ken's Trading across from the airport. I had seen a tip on this forum that they will rent vehicles so I asked the person in charge if I could rent the cheapest multicab for a couple of days. He said it was 1,000 per day. I said OK. He asked what I will use it for. I said I need to shop for building supplies and it will be more convenient for me if I have a multicab pickup to avoid delivery hassles. He made a phone call and then said "Sorry, I cannot rent to you because you will be using the multicab to carry things in the back. We only rent to people who will not be carrying anything in the back." Its more fun in Philippines. I decided to have my building supplies delivered and would never ask to rent from Ken's again. If you ever do, don't tell them you will be carrying anything.
I guess this may have something to do with the licence type ie it may require a professional licence to do what you proposed as against a non professional licence. Just a thought.
My suggestion is to buy a 100,000P beater that works reasonably well and right away advertise it for sale, quoting the date you will be leaving. Cars/trucks in that price range are out there and easily disposable as they are cheap. If you buy right, advertise smart you might end up with your ride for next to nothing when you leave.....
