    MD referral and scabies?

i've got ''something,'' it started off as bunhoks (Bunhoks anyone ? | Dumaguete Info ) but i recently realized i haven't felt a bunhok bite for a couple of weeks so i assumed i got rid of them till next dry season, however, the symptoms (or similar symptoms) persist. i got online and came up with scabies as a big possibility and purchased some Permethrin, a scabicide, but it doesn't seem to helping.

my feet and lower legs are swollen to the max and itch like hell. the flesh is reddish and the skin is peeling. a clear liquid, maybe fibrinogen, is leaking from the pores.

i haven't been to MD since 1969 and up until now, i've taking care of my dis-eases with natural methods but i'm thinking of seeing a doctor and would appreciate any MD recommendations and or personal experiences with scabies and the like.

    thanks all...

    Scabies: Symptoms, Transmission, and Diagnosis

My wife worked in a hotel laundry and brought it home one day. It not serious if you take care of it right away but it could progress into an infection. If its scabies, sounds like you left it too long and may need antibiotics. A doctor visit is cheep so get your @ss there and get a doc to look at it. The Philippines is a breading ground for bacteria, germs and all sorts of bugs. Wash all the clothes, towels and bedding in hot water and see a doctor...

What Are the Symptoms of Scabies?
After the initial exposure to scabies, it can take up to six weeks for symptoms to appear. The symptoms usually develop more quickly in people who’ve had scabies before.

The hallmark symptoms of scabies include a rash and intense itching that gets worse at night. Continuous scratching of the infected area can create sores that become infected. If this occurs, additional treatment with antibiotics for the skin infection may be indicated.

In babies and toddlers, the most commonly infected areas are the:

    • head
    • face
    • neck
    • hands
    • soles of the feet
Common sites for the rash in older children and adults include the:

    • wrist
    • elbow
    • armpit
    • nipple
    • penis
    • waist
    • buttocks
    • area between the fingers
The rash itself can consist of tiny blisters or pimple-like bumps. The burrow tracks of the mite can also be seen on the skin. They may appear as tiny raised or discolored lines.

Some people with scabies may develop another form of scabies known as Norwegian scabies or crusted scabies. This is a more severe and extremely contagious type of scabies. People with crusted scabies develop thick crusts of skin that contain thousands of mites and eggs.

Crusted scabies doesn’t always cause an itchy rash. Instead, it can lead to other symptoms, such as widespread crusts on the skin that are:

    • thick
    • gray
    • crumble easily when touched
Crusted scabies usually develops in people with weakened immune systems. This includes people with HIV or AIDS, people who use steroids or other treatments such as certain medications for rheumatoid arthritis, or people who are undergoing chemotherapy. The scabies mites can overpower the immune system more easily and multiply at a quicker rate. It’s spread in the same way as normal scabies.

Wife had similar problem recently. Scratched herself up really badly. Our excellent family doctor tried treatment with antibiotics with no luck. It was not scabies. She then referred us to a dermatologist. Excellent woman - recognized problem right away. Prescribed course of anti-fungal pills, special soap and a fungicidal cream. Did the trick - took 3 weeks but all scar tissue and itching gone. Self medication is not the way to go - probably save in the long run by getting the correct medical advice!

My GF's son got them at school and gave them to her and her whole family and she gave them to me. I bought permethrin for everyone and it worked for me but even though I explained how to use it they would only spot treat with it so they didn't get rid of them. I also washed all their bedding with a concentration of Lysol and picked up enough plastic at Mandaue foam to cover all their mattresses. We wound up parting for other reasons but not before she transmitted them to me again. Permethrin didn't cut it this time and wasn't available at several pharmacies. I went to the second line treatment which was Malathion (garden variety), diluted and applied over my whole body (just as one would with permethrin) every other day for about two weeks. I wanted them gone so I also spot treated them with clear nail polish as I would have with chiggers after washing the Malathion off. I also used flea and tick soap when I showered between Malathion treatments and used flea and tick powder in my bedding. The rash can appear on any part of your body, that doesn't mean that is where they are. Mine sort of looked like a faint tattoo in red that appeared on my forearms while the little bastards were on my chest. These are tiny critters and they don't move fast and I believe they take the path of least resistance. On the irritated spots on my chest it would appear to spread downward. When treating with clear nail polish left on overnight you would know it was effective by a dimple upwards and sometimes a small amount of pus the little bastards may also itch like crazy for a short period because they are dying and frantic. You can peel off the nail polish and treat as you would any small infected place at that time. I would wash the spot and apply some Walmart brand antibiotic crème that I brought from the US which by the way seemed a lot more powerful than the local variety. If you do the nail polish thing, you might want to shave the area first or remove the nail polish in the shower with soap and water. Maybe not the best way but it worked for me and while it may not help Norm it may help someone else in the future. A liter of Malathion will treat a lot more people than less than 30 ml of permethrin and costs a lot less which may matter if an entire family of 15 people is affected.

You could ask the dermatologist, Dr. Munoz across the highway from Cang's, to have a look and treatment or recommendation. Or go to the Silliman clinic. I would not hesitate.

Dr. Munoz works on a first come first serve basis, closed at lunch for a couple hours.

    i'm happy to report:

the little woman went to the Muñoz Skin Clinic on monday and made an appointment for me.
i went in the next day at appointment time and was promptly taken in..

dr Muñoz took a quick look at my condition and asked me a few questions.
she said my skin problem was definitely NOT scabies and NOT contagious and most likely due to an allergy, possibly dust.

she gave me prescription for Levocetirizine tablets and Desown lotion, with a check up appoint in two weeks.
in and out in 20 minutes

    P400

A few yrs back I visited dr Munoz for some infection on both feet, she gave me some creams to start with which didn't work then told me I had some allergy and to stop drinking and eating pork and chicken and put me on steroids which didn't go down well either!
Anyway it didn't work either, then a friend of the wife visited one day and they got chatting about my feet and she said try bL cream and it's available in the mall, tops n bottoms and many other places,it's a Chinese fungicidal cream so I'm told but it worked a treat and it's only p25 per pot!

robert k I would never dream of putting malathion anywhere near any part of my body, that stuff is evil. When I use it here for pests I always warn everyone to shut Windows and doors and wear a mask and gloves. It banned in the eu and has been for many years, you must have stank of rotten cabbages when you applied a it as always reminds me of that smell.
