Had a brain fart I guess. Forgot that no such thing here as a trial by peers but just the political elite.

 

Profiling based on personal experience at its finest. My turn. I find a 30 year old guy from Mississippi hanging out in the Philippines as odd at best. I find a mother putting up with a lot of sh*t to ensure that her child can eat and have a place to live as understandable. It's usually about who holds the power that is the victimizer. Who has the power in this situation? Find that out and you will likely find who the victim is. I don't know who the the victim is here, but if I was in Vegas and had to bet, I know who I would bet on. Does a tough life justify taking advantage of someone....no. Does a good life justify taking advantage of someone...no. Maybe it's a zero sum game, but I really think you have to consider what is driving the behavior. I wonder how many members here have grown up in abject poverty and homeless. How many here would do whatever it takes to help your family?

Don't get me started on the legal system. In my experience it's a total joke, designed for, run by and for the benefit of the rich.

Appreciate this observation. I may also add that this type of guy can be from anywhere on the planet and can come from any social/economic group.

Wrye83....Playing devils advocate, eh? I was just responding in kind, to the specifics of the the thread. I don't recall saying only 30 years olds from Mississippi seemed odd. You aren't from Mississippi are you? Joking aside. I find any 30 year old moving to the Philippines a statistical anomaly. Sure there are exceptions to every rule and you are probably one of them, but that doesn't invalidate the rule. It's more about the the fact that he is choosing to do it, not his ability to do it. None of us personally know this guy or girl, so it's really all speculation at this point.

Having different life experiences leads to different views on life. How's that for wisdom?

 

There are heaps of younger expat guys living in Manila so it's not at all odd there.

 

Another devil's advocate......It may be my ignorance, although I have been to Manila. Can you convert heaps into numerical form for me? It very hard to do an analysis on heaps? There are also 30 year old guys employed by foreign companies doing business in Manila and people that travel for months at a time like those Europeans. Someone has to be paying for those very nice high rises. Can we agree that as percent of 30 years olds in the US/world/Mississippi, the number is a very,very small number? Now the tough question is how many of those are odd? No point in dragging this out, if you think every 30 year old guy running around manila as an expat is normal, that fine with me. Life is too short....Cheers.

What is normal?
conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected - adj
the usual, average, or typical state or condition - noun
What is odd?
different from what is usual or expected; strange -adj

Based on these accepted definitions, probably all people retiring in the Philippines are odd. Some just odder (more odd) than others.
