i'm 10km downwind from duma and i've been smelling burning trash for a couple of days. at 1st, i thot it was one of the neighbors burning their trash in their evening burn ritual but that usually only lasts for an hour or so and the smell and winds didn't add up. so, now i know...
I use to live out that way and had to move because of the stench from the dumb. They are always burning trash there too. Problem is the plastic bottles and stuff in that fire. They have been warned many times about this and nothing gets done.
Warned by Who? My friend, was this an official warning following complaints from the Public and /or other Agencies of local Government?
So atlast after several days of the dump site burning the city has decided to evacuate some areas around the dumpsite!
Thanks for the update. Probably going to be similar to the payments promised for indigent families before the holidays... Never did hear if they ever got dispersed to those who needed it!
It is sort of funny when you read the article, as "Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria said the fire was expected due to extreme heat because of the El Niño phenomenon. A few days ago, the temperature in Dumaguete was at 43 degrees centigrade and due to spontaneous dumpsite combustion. He, however, said low-cost housing sites in the vicinity are protected against the spread of the fire, except for the toxic smoke, while affected scavengers will be given emergency aid from the Public Assistance Fund of the city.*JFP/JG' So you see folks we are all safe from the fire, it is just the toxic smoke that may cause some problems... lol. You really can not say more insensitive funny things sometimes than the politicians say here.
Global warming/Climate change caused the fire. We demand restitution from big pollution offenders like US.
