Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has shortened the usage of the Dumaguete Airport runway to ensure the safety of the public as tall trees have posed danger to commercial jets.

CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio said the Dumaguete Airport operations would be temporarily limited to propeller-type commercial aircraft and general aviation jets.

“We cannot compromise the safety of the public. We will come up with a decision next week whether we will permanently limit it or downgrade the airport,” he said in a phone interview.

Apolonio added that the owner of the private lot has refused to cut down seven tall trees located at least 50 meters from the runway.

The trees have been obstructing the glide path of incoming flights on the approach to runway 09 from the west.

CAAP operations assistant director general Rodante Joya said pilots and airline companies have complained about the presence of tall trees that are hazardous to aircraft during the landing phase of flights as they almost touch the belly of the planes on runway descent, posing a threat to life and property. I have emailed Congressman Henry Pride Teves on this situation, as it needs someone with common sense to sort out this debacle.

CAAP cited an incident on Tuesday involving a Cebu Pacific Airbus A320 aircraft which was forced to stay overnight at the airport’s parking bay after mechanics found a hydraulic leak on the right side main landing gear and tree leaves on that part of the aircraft, “attributed to tall trees lining up on the runway approach.”

Dumaguete/Sibulan Airport is now downgraded. Operations limited to propeller-type planes. This, after a Cebu Pacific plane hit a tree as it was approaching the runway. This, after a family reportedly continues to refuse to have their trees cut. Who to blame? It could reflect poor negotiation skills, or inefficient handling on the part of people in authority, or loopholes in the law, or abject neglect of rights of the agrieved on all sides. -MRG

If the foliage visible in the picture is indeed from the trees in this dispute, these trees are ridiculously high and pose an imminent threat to not only the airplanes and their (human) cargo, but also for the owner of the property and his neighbours and all innocent users of the highway passing the airport. There is only one solution to this problem: Get an Army detail of the Corps of Engineers (or equivalent) with some heavy equipment and bulldoze the property and uproot the trees. The owner gets 6 hours to get his crap out from his dwelling and a check for the land now confiscated by the Government at the mean sqmtr price for agricultural land in that area. He can have his day in court (I checked: there's a slot open in February 2023), but he needs to be removed quickly before real accidents happen. There is no way this issue can be solved in a respectable, negotiated way and the owner is simply trying to make a bundle by holding the whole community hostage.

There must be some politics somewhere in this issue,I'm sure it will come out over time! As of now there are still A320's flying in and out of Duma bit for how long?
Let's keep this on topic this time please.

As we have said on many things, it will only take a disaster and/or loss of life before anything is done. IMHO

Dumaguete is growing too fast. I'm all for closing the airport. Now we just need to figure out how to close the roads coming into the city and the port. Just airdrop supplies and hot chicks.

    A barrack room lawyer writes...

Seems like there is a Compulsory Purchase Statute in the Phils (just looked it up). Should be a no brainer really for any City Council legal beagle to use. Oh, I forgot, there has to be a will to do something around here in the first instance. Read into that what you will. And no, nobody blow the ab extra whistle here please, there has to be proof of actus reus. Fiat justitia et pereat mundus etc (that's enough Latin now C, pour yourself another rum and tonic, and don't bother the good netizens of this forum any longer)
