I like the 3 MBPS PLDT ADSL service but the modem/router they supply is notorious for failing, and mine has failed again. Yes they will replace it for free after I jump through hoops for 2 weeks and b*tch and moan loud enough, but what if I could beat the system by buying a better modem? Where in Dumaguete can I find a good quality ADSL modem. Ideally it would be a retail store close to Sibulan with a technician who can come out and set it up or repair/replace it when and if it breaks down. Anyone done this? Options?
I would think their modems would be locked in some way. Best place to ask might be CDR King. They seem to have what you are looking for online: CDR KING Not sure who would be able to come set it up.
Wis Wish I could go to that site and check it out but my PLDT modem is not working and using my pocket wifi I get re-routed to a captcha page that I cannot get past.

If you chose to use a third party router it will have to be set up by PLDT as the M.A.C. address has to accepted by the PLDT back office software. Meaning PLDT will have to enter the MAC address into their data base and associate it with your account. PLDT's cooperation will be necessary.
If I were buying my own I would want the router to be 802.11 bgnac. Ac means it can work on 2.4 and 5 Ghz and often provides a much better wifi signal if you have something that is AC capable. Microwave ovens and cordless phones often use/emit 2.4Ghz. If you don't have anything that works with AC now, well hopefully this router will last long enough until you do, basically until everything is so equipped.
Just an update: I did try to buy a modem/router to replace my PLDT supplied one. I went to a computer shop across the street from Unitop. The guy who seemed to be in charge would not sell me one. Well, I suppose he would have if I had pushed the issue but he told me it was a waste of money as PLDT would have to come out and install it so they may as well replace the one they supply at the same time. So PLDT finally came out and 'fixed' the problem. Turned out to not be the modem this time. They spent about an hour on the phone testing and playing with things and then told me it was a 'Manila problem' but they have it sorted now. Its been working for the last 2 weeks anyway :-)
