Noooooo..tis not my job pard. I'll leave that to the folks down the corridor two doors to the left. 'Sides, "tough" is a matter of perspective di ba? I notice you have not engaged with the science here. Is that because you need a dictionary? Robert, I'm sure if ever we meet the sparks will fly. But it would be a massive favour if you did less of the assume. We'd get on perhaps like a house on fire. I haven't met Mrs CEO from Mega Corp, nor do I live in Texas. But I did escape internment without trial, nor has anyone pished in my cherios lately and I think I have never lived in a Socialist country or left my domicile because someone dumped on my doorstep. Is that ok? Now engage with the content. Let's have a beer one day, it'll be a row I'm sure. C
What is a disease or sickness and what isn't? I used to read a lot of medical studies and journals and what I came to understand is that often they go looking for something and that causes them to find it because its what they want to find it. A paedophile may have different brain chemistry than what we call a normal healthy person but the same sorts of studies have shown that poor blacks often have a different brain chemistry then middle class whites. Its shown that gays have a different brain chemistry then straights. Its shown that women have a different brain chemistry then men. So what is a disease? Can your race be a disease? Can your wealth status be a disease? Can your sexual orientation be a disease? Can your gender be a disease? Who is also the one who decides what is normal and what isn't? I still see it and will always see it as one person is the victim who is the person who had something wrong done to them and another person is the bad person who did the wrong to the victim. Its that simple and cut and dry to me. I no longer buy into *feel good* medicine and trying to class everything that is different as a disease or sickness. Having bad done to someone as a child also doesn't create an excuse to commit bad acts when they are older and many many people around the world and likely many of us have had that and risen above it being testaments that its not an excuse or valid reason to commit bad acts.
Actually I did engage with the "science" when you suggested I eat people when I said I would decline because it hadn't worked out well for many on PNG. Actually you haven't actually shown any science, just citing a few volumes of journals. I could point you to the bible or a Chilton manual, that would neither mean the information was correct, nor that it was relevant. In the 1940's medical science was certain that everyone had 48 chromosomes, it was in all the textbooks. It was "science". It wasn't true. You yourself called the pedophiles victims, read your post. Where I currently and temporarily reside due to having to take care of personal and family business because my aunt passed and it so happens it looks like my lawsuit against a land company is actually progressing towards a conclusion this year, has what bearing on this thread? What is your point?
Did you read the journal articles? They were pretty good science, methodologically reasonably robust, good testing for reliability/validity. In my books that makes for pretty reasonable stuff. The same type of science that keeps you safe when anyone needs to pop a pill for the chest infection or shoot some insulin for the blood sugars. It's what we do in the medical profession. I can't keep up with 'em all lol, at the best I try to keep an eye on the meta analyses and try to pick holes in the methodology, statistical analysis etc - that's my training, keep a critical eye on what other folks are up to. Just to correct you, I didn't say that all paedophiles are victims. I said that boys seem to be more vulnerable after sustained abuse to developing anti social (paedophilic) inclinations. In terms of disease/chemicals, glad to add a note or two. It's down to terminology really. Usually a disease is something contracted, in very simple terms. Hormones are what the brain produces, yes they have a chemical basis as you'll find stuff there from the periodic table. But essentially it is important to think in terms of hormones. Nuero-chemistry is not my field lol. As I said, this sort of stuff belongs to the guys down the corridor, two doors to the left, um right...the brain structuralist boffins are on the left. My stuff is child development and picking up the pieces of trauma, sexual abuse, you name it. Maybe I have a neuro dysfunction as obviously I can't remember left from right We talk, we share papers/symposia and conferences. I am proud to say as a researcher/clinician/academic in this area we are more and more confident of our findings - due to the requirement for publications to stress the limitations of their studies (take note please Robert) - and the fact that our community is ready to pick holes in what we publish. Lots of colleagues are given to boasting. The good news they say is that treatments are just around the corner. I'm not so sure about that. Either way, just to this simple jobbing Doc/Academic, it seems that the science is compelling enough to justify a rethink about how the Criminal Justice system handles offenders. The personal note Robert...I am going to take administer a self warning not to wind you up mate. I'm sure it's a difference in culture. I'm given to curiosity about the way you think, it would be amazing to have a yap. I'll leave my white coat outside if we do Really over and out on this one, C
I for one would like to know where it was that I said that you said "all pedophiles are victims". I don't recall seeing / saying that anywhere. I won't say quote please, as it would be pointless. "We don't kill victims, we try to treat them, as well as making the world as safe as we can for kids and victims." Not killing victims is a fine goal, doubly so since the victims of pedophiles by definition are children. I am in complete agreement that we should not kill the victim children. I saw nowhere where anyone advocated killing the victimized children. With that said, if someone hit me over the back of the head and took my wallet and now being broke, I later decided to do the same thing to someone else? Would I be a victim? Would I be a perpetrator? Or is it possible to be both? Even if it were both, would I not still be responsible? If I were responsible, would / should claiming that I had been a victim previously have much impact on the punishment I had earned? I also have to admit that you shot completely under me. I couldn't figure out what one of your previous posts had to do with this thread and I was trying to fit it into the framework of this one...somehow. I realize now it didn't even belong in this thread. For the time I wrote the post and probably a half hour after, I was under the mistaken impression that as others have done, that you were suggesting that since I wasn't resident in Dumaguete and surrounds at this moment I had no right to an opinion. I didn't realize immediately that you were writing about a completely unrelated thread from some time ago which I believe is generally considered bad form. I would suggest (only suggestion) that if you have something to say about a different thread, say it in that thread.
