I like how you approach your profession Dude. About the only thing I can add, having had 44 years IT experience is that I learned the most by my programming mistakes and had to debug programs. Technology didn't change as fast in those days as it does now so I imagine learning the latest and greatest is a must.
Thanks much for you insightful words. My wife and I are just trying to find our way to the Philippines before retirement age as well. I have been a construction contractor for 25 years. She is a Programmer/ Business Analyst with the degree. We are doing ok here..... but want to come there to teach our children about being Filipino. I.e.... learn the language and culture. We visit, own land, just have not figured out how to make that next step smartly and safely. Following the forums and blogs there is much conflicting information, " but they are all experts lol". So for someone like myself who likes to know before I go it is hard to sell out and go. Btw I agree that you can ask Mr Google everything. I learned to build computers that way. Asawa learns new code that way.
Caveat, this is an observation, but not direct experience. I have this theory I call the efficiency principle. Basically it says we are as efficient as we need to be, that's one of the ways we avoid boredom. An example would be, if you are very busy you make a list of what you need and you only shop once a week, but if you have a lot of time on you hands, you don't need to be as efficient, so instead you go and buy 1 or 2 items every time it's needed a couple of times a day. If you need to go to town you might do one task, but if very busy you will do multiple tasks. That how we adjust to the extra time. Being inefficient doesn't take up all our time, but you'd be surprised how much time it can take up. Now you only need a hobby a couple of hours a day.
I spent the best part of 30+ years building Hotrods and Customs for people, always planned to build my own Rod one day but am still waiting for that to happen, and not knowing the Laws here in the Philippines regards Hotrods I doubt that will ever happen somehow, but I LOVED what I did! To take a rusty old piece of scrap and turn it into someone's pride and joy gave me a great feeling, I wish I could build a workshop here to be able to potter around tinkering with something OLD but here it seems there are no Vintage models waiting to be restored or Rodded (1930's/40's/50's) :( Yes I MISS working like I did before but truth is my body is used and abused severely so am past being able to work like I once did, if only I could wind back the clock :/
Just a "newbie " retired. Yes I do. Due to my ex duty, mission and Hippocratic professional values. Just a temporary missing, not a deep regret. I have to care my own condition right now. Thank's to Good pinay care.
not retire...just change priority in life...instead of working for someone, i work for myself now. if i retire 100%, meaning no job/responsibilities to attend everyday, i will be bored in no time....i rather keep my brain busy.
