That's a great campaign slogan, but do you really believe that.

There is no nation that issues a greater threat of loss of human life than the US. We don't execute people, but we have vast resources to put people in jail (I consider that a loss of life). We lock up more people than any other nation for drugs by a longshot. The "three strikes" laws that some states adopt have put people in jail with "20 to life" for seemingly minor offenses. Combine this law with "zero tolerance" laws and you get disaster. Zero tolerance states in the past have handed out felony charges even for possession of small amounts of marijuana. If you can't afford a lawyer and instead opt for a public defender, then you might get stuck with any bullshit charges given to you.

If Duterte believes that drug dealers fear death squads, then he should look to Mexico as a case study. If people are willing to enter the brutal world of the drug trade in Mexico, then there is no threat of government violence which will stop people from taking that step. Duterte couldn't match the Mexican cartels level of terror without elevating himself to that of a Saddam Hussein type of dictator.

Drug trafficking is a market. Human life has a number. The threat of loss of life is simply one variable which goes into calculation of market prices. As we have seen, sometimes the value of human life can be low in this country. As long as people get addicted to drugs, they will be willing to do anything to meet those market rates.

As we have seen in the US - a war on drugs doesn't work. The greatest threat to the cartels in Mexico is the legalization of marijuana.

If history is a guide to the future, then yes, I do believe it.
Duterte has been successful in Davao, an area of over one million. Granted that pales in comparison to 90+million but there are a number of examples of countries where tough laws and swift penalties curb drug crimes. Singapore, Indonesia, the Middle East, etc.
The United States incarcerates more people simply because we have the best law enforcement and criminal justice system in the world, by far. I am at a loss for why it is a disaster for felony charges being applied for drug crimes, even seemingly minor.
If you can't do the time then don't do the crime.
I agree with a lot of what you're saying, particularly the last line.
Mexican cartels are a violent bunch that kill judges, families of judges, politicians, or any one else that is a threat and isnt sufficiently armed to kill them first. It's that simple. This world is still governed by bombs and bullets.
Look I know I have a brute, simplistic view, and people like to think there are so many nuanced issues surrounding drug and other violent crime and I don't doubt it.
I'm just a believer that people have no choice than to follow their self preservation instinct.
Where there is a market for tons of cash, someone is going to be there to fill it. But kill enough of that scum, and I bet my next pay check the drug problem gets smaller...real quick.

We can't solve a problem with the same mind that created it.
We know what would happen if any of the other Filipino candidates were elected.
More of the same: drugs, corruption, ruined families, individuals, communities, etc.
    Give violence a chance : )

75% of the GDP going into the pockets of the 40 wealthiest families? How much of the GDP is remittances of OFW again? Sounds like they 40 families captured the rest.

A bit taken back by this comment but yes it is a public college that is attainable for the lower wealth spectrum. I heard the Geology program at NORSU Duma is the best in country, probably due to the thermal plants being nearby.

Ya Dude, Shabu is expensive but I really don't think Dumaguete is worse than other places. Sure were a bit wealthier than Tagbilaran or some other cities. I live fairly close to the Natl Highway in Duma city limits and have been warned to not walk that area at night, and I don't. I actually love living close in, screw Bacong or Valencia and all, been there done that

Sorry. On rereading I probably did not make myself clear. What I meant was: Its hard to understand something that seems like a senseless crime. I hope that explains my comment.

A suspect is being investigated who has been at my site as well as the home of the "big" robbery at my friends house in Bacong. Perhaps he robbed both houses. Don't f'n trust anyone.

Note to self. If I really need a 150 Lb safe, be sure to weld rebar to it and set it in 500Lb of maximizer concrete.
