BANGKOK: In Thailand lebende Ausländer sollen nach einem Plan des Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission künftig für ihr Handy eine spezielle SIM-Karte nutzen.

Sicherheitsdienste sollen damit in die Lage versetzt werden, zu jeder Zeit den Standort des Ausländers im Königreich ausfindig zu machen. Die für Rundfunk und Telekommunikation zuständige Behörde verweist auf Nachbarländer, in denen eine solche SIM-Karte für Ausländer bereits eingeführt oder geplant ist. Laut der Behörde soll es keine Ausnahmen geben, weder für einen mit einer Thai verheirateten Ausländer noch für Ausländer, die im Königreich arbeiten bzw. hier mit einem Jahresvisum leben. Ausgenommen von der Regelung bleiben ausländische Urlauber, so lange sie ihre im Heimatland erworbene SIM-Karte nutzen. Sollten sie aber eine thailändische kaufen wollen, müssen die Mobilegeschäfte eine Karte ausschließlich für Ausländer herausgeben, berichtet Khaosod weiter. Das Neue an der speziellen Karten: Diese bzw. der Eigentümer kann über GPS ausfindig gemacht werden. Die spezielle SIM-Karte soll der nationalen Sicherheit dienen und Straftaten verhindern helfen. Nach Angaben der Behörde könnten die Karten in sechs Monaten ausgegeben werden. Nach dem Plan soll die Polizei nach einem Handybesitzer nur mit einem Gerichtsbeschluss fahnden.

 

I would just send my lazy son or one of his friends to buy a sim card for me. That seems like a done deal.

Just relocated to the UAE (again). The surveillance is quite something. As a resident you can't have a sim without bringing your passport and having your thumb printed. You keep the number forever...or until you leave. That's on top of the retinal scan, the finger and palm prints required for the residence visa, the medical exam and umpteen other things they want in triplicate, just to f.art in private. Can't see the Phils getting something like a sim together in just as many umpteen years really.

The article said that if you use international roaming on your phone that you don't need the Thai sim card. I personally can't see international criminals not availing of the roaming option.

In the US we have something called a Tracfone. I like to call them the No Track phone because you can buy them for cash, buy top up cards for minutes with cash and your name is never associated with the phone. Tracfones also have roaming (same service as AT&T), should you be planning an international business trip to Thailand. Several companies will ship the phones and load cards worldwide.
