Watched this interesting little documentary on YouChube. Absolutely amazed me at how different Manila was then.
I'm just now about an hour into this and I'm really glad I took the time to watch the video. Very interesting to see what's the same and what has changed.
My first visit to Dumaguete was 1984. I spent a month and saw maybe one other white person. Back then everyone looked at you and said hey Joe. Not many outsiders made it this far south. I was a point of interest everywhere we went. People were friendly, just very curious. It probably helped that I am 6 foot 5 inch. Nowhere to hide in the crowd. Anyway, a very different experience back then.
I think it would have been very interesting to visit the Philippines back in the 60s and 70s. While I was in the military I had an NCO that had been stationed in Subic and he had some pretty awesome stories (my x-wife's father had some pretty cool stories as well). It certainly wasn't the same when I lived there, you could tell the glory days had been gone for several decades.
Amazing video! He used "Anak" as background music in one of the scenes though his tour might have had been before 1977.

My first time to Philippines was 1964...yeah, I'm older than dirt, thank you US Navy. Last time was 68 then came back about a year or so after Pinatubo blew in 92 I think. Philippines has changed a lot. Back then there were very few if any motorcycles and few cars. Jeepneys were everywhere. Subic, Baguio, Manila, Cavite, Cebu were some of the places I got to visit. The people are much larger both height and width. I love the Philippines and the Filipino people although there are times I scratch my head at some of the things they do.
Was in Angeles 60’s and early 70’s. Vietnam war, some kind of booming fighter jets landing in Clark field in the middle of the night for refuel and taking off again, huge Americans (childhood perspective) soldiers coming out of Clark into Balibago for R&R, tossing chocolate candies at us if we yell “Hey Joe!” as they saunter by with boomboxes on their shoulders blastin’ the Stones. Seem like a scene out of a movie? I was there! Angeles was otherwise a lazy little town back then. Fun place. Manila was cleaner back then too!
