Implementation of the anti-muffler ordinance of the Dumaguete City is in full swing, according to Provincial Highway Patrol Team (PHPT) provincial officer PS/Insp Robelito Mariano.

For the last six days, the team impounded a total of 83 motorcycles with modified ad defective mufflers and other violations ranging from driving with license, unregistered motorcycles.

Some were flagged down without side mirrors, tail lights and signal lights as initial violations, that led to driving without expired license and unregistered motorcycles.

Yesterday, 13 motorcycles more were impounded or a total of 96 for seven days of operation, including one motorist who engaged members of the highway patrol team in a chase, and which resulted to a recovery of illegal drugs inside the utility box of his driven unit a Fury Kawasaki 125cc motorcycle.

The driver was identified later as Jake Ong, resident of Ajong, Sibulan who engaged SPO2 Aurelio Bodo of the HPT in a chase for several minutes around the city. Ong countered the one-way Perdices street, until he hit another motorbike along Locsin street, and then ran on foot.

Aside from driving a motorcycle with fictitious origin, SPO2 Bodo said the suspect could have something in his utility box for refusing to give the key, prompting the HPT to hire a locksmith.

Witnessed by media and the suspect himself, two transparent plastic sachets believed to contain shabu were recovered from the utility box, including tinfoils and two disposable lighters.

The suspect vehemently denied he owns the illegal drugs and accused the HPT personnel of planting the evidence against him.

Also recovered were fake identification cards, such as a student ID of NORSU, fake driver’s license, and a fake ID as office staff of Energy Development Corporation (EDC).

Ong had earlier presented a fake OR/CR of his motorcycle, that has a plate of a Yamaha Mio motorcycle and a motorvehicle number that of a Honda Wave.

In an interview, Ong admits all are fake because his motorcycle was three to four times apprehended by the LTO in the past.jg

Do they auction off the bikes after a certain time? I could start a business.

There is 2 more muffler 'volunteers' they can come get in Valencia. Easy to find every night about 10pm as they can be heard all the way across the whole town. Have to pause talking or TV just like at an airport because can't hear a d*mn thing besides their exhaust.

Yeah, those guys are pricks...but have political connections. Would be hilarious if the town installed some large unmarked speed bumps along their regular route. I'd pop some popcorn and pull out a lawn chair right next to the speed bump to watch that disaster play out.

While gratifying at first, probably not the greatest idea to knock the Mayor's (or whoever they are connected to) buddy on his @ss - no matter how much he deserves it.

    HGP will get augmentation force

The HPG disclosed earlier today that the Provincial Police Office (NOPPO) will provide augmentation force in the crackdown against motorcycle with illegal muffler. The number of registered motorcycles in the city is estimated at about 33,000 plus. The addition of more PNP personnel will be a big help in solving the traffic problem in the city, more personnel will ensure more apprehension.

The HPG has warned violators that they will soon implement the Fines and Penalties for Violations of Laws, Rules and Regulations Governing Land Transportation.

Under the revised schedule of fines and penalties for violations of LTO regulation a motorcycle with a noisy muffler will be fined P5,000, Unregistered Motorcycle P10,000, driving without license P5,000.

The warning is an opportunity for drivers to change their mufflers, considering that the fine is quite a huge amount.

I rode past that "event" southbound yesterday on my scooter. They had quite a large lineup of cycles...probably at least 50....when I went by. Looked like they were only stopping northbound cycles and only one marked police car that I noticed. While they're at it, I am surprised they are not tacking on "no helmet" fines just to up the revenue. Of course, they couldn't possibly stop everybody who is not wearing a helmet because that would pretty much be everybody on a motorized cycle. Oddly for me, I actually had my helmet on which I wear when I think traffic will be at its most crowded and craziest, or when the weather is crap.

Yup was only north bound, there was a truck and a bigger bike from hpg but several other officers who seemed to be in plain clothers with some sort of id badge. Also checking papers, licence and lights.
