Seems like everyone has potted plants and the majority seem to be filled with soil from the "Midnight Soil Recovery" service. But since I am not a big fan of that method it would be interesting to know if anyone has a source of decent soil for planting in clay pots. In Dumaguete or Sibulan would be nice.

Most commercial growers here make their own soil, using native soil and rice hulls. Unfortunately the closet rice mill is now in Bayawon, (if anyone knows of one closer please comment as a number of members are currently looking for rice hulls) and sells is quantites beyond the needs of the normal homeowner. You can buy rice hulls at the nursery close to the park in Valencia (not those selling on the steps adjacent to the park, but kiddle-corner to the north west). I think I remember them being 60 P a bag. Just mix it to your liking with native soil, sandy type preferred (50/50 seems good) and put in some fertilizer and you will have great soil. Because of the high organic material and lack of clay, it will dry quicker and require more water, but provide a great medium for fast growth. Be sure the rice hulls has started to compost a little. You can also make your own organic compost and eliminate burning all the organic litter too at the same time by having a compost pile.

I sent my gf to town to get on a tricycle and go find some. She did. Cost me about 60 pesos a sack for what seems to be about 100 pound sack of soil. Discounted to 3 sacks for 160 pesos. No idea if she got a deal or underpaid but it was worth it to avoid hassle.

In regard to rice hulls I suggest they are better when carbonized in a soil mix.
Composting here is quick due to the climatic conditions particularly if you use the "Berkley method"
There is a guy off the road to the airport the turning is at the junction where the Kia dealership is who has a large commercial operation producing vermicompost which he exports to Manila, I did have his phone number but lost the phone, there is a previous post about worms on the forum and his contact number and name may be there.
