    My California Driver's License expired while I was in Japan, and I have found no need to drive here. But, I am going back to the USA in September for a family reunion and would like to rent a car - thus the need. Are there any tricks to the exam and is there an easier way?

    Thanks in advance. :smile:

    No easy way now but have a look at the site I put up for a Mock test;

    BTW depending how long ago it expired you may still be able to exchange it for a PI License

    Here's the problem. Even if there was an "easy way" to get a Philippine license there is little likelihood that you would have it in the permanent plastic versions before you leave. You could try. I heard they might be available by August (thanks Jack for that info) but I am sure that you could not use the paper copy they will issue you anywhere else than in Philippines. Even the Canadian Consulate in Cebu would not accept my Philippine LEGAL drivers license as ID because it was just a paper copy.

    Have you tried renewing it online? I renewed my Texas license without stepping foot in the state. I also did not have to take any exam. They used the picture from my expired license again. They mailed it to me overseas.

    I am sure when I read up on this I needed to renew my Expired Australian Driver's Licence to be able to exchange it here for a Philippines Licence, otherwise I would need to sit the Practical and Theoretical Exams/tests to obtain a local Licence.

    I *think* the OP is asking about renewing his American driver's Licence...

    If so;
    Australia allows you to renew your Driver's Licence Online up to 2 years after the expiry date, maybe America offers the same deal where you simply log online to your local (US) Licencing Department and using a Credit Card, pay to renew your original Licence due to being out of the country at the time when it was due to be renewed...

    I believe Toto is talking about renewing a California license. I doubt, and really hope, that a Philippine license will not be honored in the US.

    Asian Licenced Drivers are allowed in Australia, many MANY Accidents involving Asian Drivers have caused public outcry there regarding allowing (especially Asian) Tourists to drive in Oz. I often wondered why Asian Driver's were so terrible at driving, until coming here and learning about the fixers most of the locals use. Like you; now I am aware WHY, I would HOPE NOT also but I am sure it is a reciprocal agreement where Licences can be used internationally when visiting other countries.

    Looked online and found the following regarding renewing an American Driver's Licence when living abroad, there are several comments below the original post that may shed light on your situation to renew, but sounds like you will need to renew in person due to changes in renewing Driver's Licences in America...

    How to renew my drivers' license from abroad?
