During a several year project in which I've been trying, with limited success, to grow beef steak tomatoes, I developed a super simply way to build a green house. Be glad to show anyone interested how to do it. I tried to attach pictures but the system said my files were too big to process. Let me know if you're interested.

I am very interested to hear why you needed a greenhouse. Theoretically, the outside temperatures should be okay; I even grew them outside in the cr*p UK climate. So I am wondering if it is to do with disease control. Whatever I think, it is your practical experience which counts and so please inform of the reason(s).

The type of greenhouse I built is intended to prevent fruit flies, and few other types of insects, from getting to the plants. I think the main reason why most of the tomatoes you see for sale locally are green is that fruit flies don't attack them until they start to turn yellow/red. The covering of the greenhouse is only a fine mesh netting. It let's rain and wind in, but keeps the bugs out.

Ok, I was confused as that is what we call a 'fruit cage' whereas a greenhouse has glass. I think the fruit flies preference for ripening fruit is connected to the smell of gases given off during that process and, by association, the toughness of the skin. Good luck with your crops.

I would like to see it, I grew Beef Steak tomatoes in my yard in San Diego. Always in summer and the hottest (west) side of the house. I never let water or rain hit the plants to knick off the buds, also had to use an insecticide powder for the large green tomatoes worms, Do those worms appear here? Pls shoot me a PM so hopefully I can take a look and pick your brain.
