President Duterte today signed an exucutive order dissolving the One Negros Region. This comes after his visit to Dumaguete a few days ago, although revoking the One Negros Region this was being considered in 2016. One reason given, is that it would cost up to P19Billion.
While I do not dispute the opening post, its nice to give the full story and link so here it is: Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 9) — President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the abolition of the Negros Island Region, a 17th region created in 2015. Duterte on Monday signed Executive Order No. 38, revoking EO 183 signed by then President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino on May 29, 2015 to form the Negros Island Region, composed of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental. "Revocation of EO No. 183. EO No. 183 creating the NIR is hereby revoked. The provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental shall revert to Region VI and Region VII, respectively," Duterte's latest EO said. He ordered the Department of the Interior and Local Government to supervise this reversion and the subsequent abolition of regional councils and offices, which must be completed within 60 days from the effectivity of the Order. "The establishment of regional offices (ROs) of departments and agencies in the NIR requires substantial appropriation to be fully operational, thus competing with government priority programs and projects for funding," the EO read. This EO takes effect upon publication in a newspaper of general circulation. Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Dino said in October 2016 that the region may be abolished because the government cannot fund the ₱19 billion needed for establishing it. He's gotta find some way to pay for all that free college being promised. I'm not sure I ever really understood the real benefits of the NIR.
You would probably see more benefits if 1. you would live in Bacolod rather than in Dumaguete and 2. you were aware that the current text for the proposed law implementing the Federalist Republic envisages the capital for the Western Visayas to be in Puerto Princessa rather than in Iloilo. Of course proposals can change, but if it stays that way it'd mean quite a bit of travel if you need to visit some regional office.
I am not sure what Mimaropa would have to do with the Western Visayas. If there is a law combining those two regions or linking them economically I am completely unaware of it.
I'm still pro NIR. Better to have all government agencies and facilities on the same island than on different islands. Imagine when you have to go to Cebu for government visits/appointments and the flight or the ferry is canceled? Especially now with this ECC mess.
Well that is a stupid place to have the capital of the Western Visayas (outside of the Western Visayas). Oh yeah.....logic- it's more fun in the Philippines.
