Agree, and, it’s more than a question of needs. The cheapest processor with the lowest ram and smallest hard-file can handle most routine tasks. I tend to overbuild to the best processor I can find with large 8 GB ram and 2 TB hard file space because I like how it runs. So beyond needs is appreciation of the tech and the fun of the hobby. Then when I run into some audio video editing program I have what I need to handle it (working with LMMS now).

When you go in there are stacks of Gigabyte Motherboards everywhere and they are furiously screwing units together. Do not be like me who (was frustrated and dropped the ball) assumed that (the Gigabyte MB) would be what you are getting as I got some 'ECS' Motherboard and no matter what I do here, I am having major memory problems were most times I can only type one or two words at a time and need to wait for things to catch up before I begin typing the next couple of words. If I ignore and look up it is either locked up or missing most of the words or parts of the words I have just typed. Tried several Browsers and have the same problem with each one. Replaced the 4GB of Memory with the matched 8GB of memory from my other Desktop PC and a very slight improvement, but still a PITA! I am of the opinion it is the Motherboard at fault. Brian,

I could be wrong, but if you are currently using a wireless keyboard with that desktop and happen to have a functional wired one laying around, it might be worthwhile to try that one and see if it solves the problem.

No, its not the average persons job to keep up to date with the ever emerging market of computer parts, the latest brands, trends, and prices. Usually a good builder should recommend some type of system based on what you actually use your system for (ie: Gaming, Work, Video Editing, etc) , and then your budget in mind, and go from there with a few options that include the most up to date parts..Unless you are a computer nerd (which i am far from..sounds like you are) - There is no way I could keep up with all the latest parts that come out that would best fit my needs..I have far more important things to deal with..

Perhaps in a case like this it it best to just purchase a factory manufactured PC. If you are a gamer you will know exactly what you want or wish you could get, same with video editing. I suspect you do not fit into those categories. If you want someone to help you decide, and simple to use hardware and software, just find an Apple store and let them build something for you.

The "average person" doesn't need a custom built computer. A quick Google search would tell you what you should expect to be getting in a computer these days.

Exactly. Off the shelf is the way to go if you don't know all the components that make up a computer. Apple is the perfect choice for people that have no interest in keeping up with computer technology. Expensive.....but that's what you get when you have no idea what you are actually paying for. Chances are high that a person building a custom computer for someone without a clue will charge more than they would a person who knows exactly what they want.

    Or not,

Just from over a decade of experience i've found that a local shop can be a great asset, providing you have some idea of what you need the computer to do. They all need to make money of course and you want the best deal. The comment about googling was probably spot on because doing a little research helps ( A lot of the big brand names ive had very bad experiences with out of box/non-tested or non-working units with poor support) - Buying locally allows it to be tested , a lot easier to have some where to walk into with it if it isn't functioning properly.

A lot of the locals shop their competition so they know the going prices but again its easy to get into that "forienger" rate mentality and get over quoted if you aren't familiar with the going rates.

After stopping into Algorithm on someone's advice, I noticed they do just what i mentioned and would expect. They provide the customer with a sheet of several current options depending on what the needs of the buyer are. (What they need it for) - and also the customers Budget - They then list the components of the Build detailed down to the make/model even price , so you know exactly what parts are in the machine, the detailed specs, and that everyone should be getting this price as it blantantly listed on their specs sheet which is handed out to everyone that is interested in a new build.

Thanks for the advice and supportive comments. I've found some great places and struck up some great informative conversations with local "experts"
