Yes, I forgot to add that one needs to be aware of their surroundings. Case in point, while walking toward Sipalay on the Nov. 18th, you could distinctly hear gunshots in the mountain to the east. As I had no backup plan for escape, I was very sensitive to my surroundings, was especially friendly with the natives, and kept a leisurely pace....definitely not saying anything to my 16 year old son until we were well clear of the iffy environment. At that time we were passing through a small conclave of living 'structures' whose inhabitants were a bit leery of a foreigner with a camera. So yes, situations could change in the blink of an eye. Fortunately, my walk will end on Dec. 2 when I finally reach Sipalay (95 km walked), then I can relax for the holidays.

Safe: we've been here 1-1/2 yrs and just made plans to stay forever. We feel safer than in San Francisco with 70,000 car break-ins a year, several muggings in our neighborhood alone, and monthly shootings in the neighborhood to our south (that's california). The crazy white boys in the US kill more churchgoers than terrorists do in all of the visayas.

The last time muslim terrorists landed on bohol the locals called the cops instantly, unlike the US, where nobody reports the crazies, and if they do, the cops can't do anything until they actually kill someone... Some reports say crime is down in manila some 30% cuz the druggies are afraid.

Banking is pretty easy, we wire funds from the US directly into our bank account at a very good exchange rate with just the wire fee (two days), then move free from the dollar account to the peso account once a month or so, then atm and do everything here in pesos...

I’m in Mabinay, Negros Oriental and never had an issue here.
The problems seem to centre around Guihulngan where the first ambush took place and took the life of the police chief.

Granted, being in such a small town you get everyone that likes to stare at the 1 of only 3 foreigners living here.

The only murders here have been personal vandettas and a security guard that was drunk and shot himself in the foot.
