In addition to all that's been said, I feel I have to stress the importance of home safety, especially if you fit the profile of a worthy target. Westerners always fall in this category.

Steel bars on windows (window grilles) are a must, and good home safety practices should be stressed throughout the entire household. Main doors should all be locked for the night, or whenever they don't need to be left unlocked. In addition to a gun, which I believe is necessary given the expectedly slow response time of the local police, I suggest owning a Ham Radio and becoming a registered member of the local ham group. Despite the age of cellphones and text messaging, I still think a ham radio can be indispensible in a real home emergency.

I know this town is not known for high crime rates, and "akyat-bahai gangs" are only heard of in large cities like Cebu and Manila, but it's always better being safe than sorry.

Don't believe everything you read on the Internet. It's better to do some independent research on your own. I'm afraid I can't take these guys "Sirius". :D

Junkyard Dogs Wet Dream "House with Grills"

Yea, I want to live in a trailer park just like you Junkyard Dog and of course spend the day talking to Uncle Buck on my ham radio while sitting on my Sears Polyester couch with He Haw on the TV.

I think the grills on windows is a bit of overkill. I didn't come here to have a house that looks like a prison. Get a guard or better yet relatives or your wife or gf. Having your house in a compound seems to work as well.

And forget the gun. ALl this talk is just spinning wheels . If you used an unlicensed gun in the states and killed someone in your house YOU will go to jail or spend much dinero defendigng you actions even though is would be self defense. In this country YOU CAN'T OWN A GUN outside of a pistol range. Shoot someone here and see how the story holds up. It won't and you will pay the price so stop all the bravdo BS talk about guns.

    It's pretty obvious I can't meet the requirements. Numbers 1 & 5 "shot" me down. :p

It depends on the person. Sure there are those who get a little too confident with a gun stashed in the house somewhere, but what I had in mind was more along the lines of the cliche of "better having it and not needing it, rather than needing it and not having it".

Settling an argument with a gun is kind of juvenile in my opinion and most if not all expats are here to enjoy life and would never be in that frame of mind.

The choice will always be yours whether it be using window grilles or having a last line of defense in the event of a home invasion. As I've mentioned before, "akyat-bahai's" are unheard of in Dumaguete, but you never know. I'm sure there have been instances of people getting home invaded on a drug or alcohol-related dare.

diver i agree with the gun thing
its a recipe for disaster here when the police are taking any excuse for a
    kickback
i've been done twice in manilla for jaywalking when at the same spot
hundreds of locals have crossed and they get nothing. I cross the road and i get arrested and fleeced. Imagine if you shot a local?
its a few thousand peso for jaywalking
i guess it would be a hell of a lot more of a bribe for a get out of jail pass for killing someone, self defense or not
besides what americans fail to recognize is that if noone had guns then you wouldn't need one to protect yourself agbainst people who have one.
catch 22 and a no brainer for anyone born outside uncle sams homeland.
but even after the massacre by the korean at the school in america has this failed to awaken any brain cells and common sense so there is no help.\
As for the bars on the windows, you need those unless you can have somone
indoors 24/7. burgalrs will get in given half a chance. also
cover the screws to the bars and windows so people can't unscrew them.
It may seem unsiglhtly but its better than having everything taken
i think violent crime is quite rare in duma but burglary isn't

Barking dogs are a problem which I don't understand how the owners can think it is not bothering others. I camp a lot of times and there is always people leaving their yippy dogs in their RV or tied to the camper. These dogs bark the WHOLE time. It drives me nuts! THe same thing happened when I lived in Daro and the people next door got a puppy then one day left for a week. They tied the puppy to the tree. It barked all night......every night....until I realized the 3rd day they still weren't back and it was starving and dehydrated. I felt bad and fed/watered the dog (which didn't help STOP the barking all night).

Thanks for this topic about GUNS! I was interested in knowing all the info. After being JUMPED by three young men on a motorcycle at night and my purse stolen (luckily the security guard came to my rescue) and they had a gun to my head.......I also wanted to carry a gun after that but didn't. THANKS everyone for the info. I think after all that I heard it will be easier to take a BIG BODY GUARD with me the next time I go out at night.LOL!

Although I don't know why I am complaining......the worst thing about dogs are that most don't have their shots in the PHL which has caused horrible deaths to young children due to the rabies they carry. There is no cure at this time. It is sad when one person's irresponsibility leads to a cruel death to an innocent person.

You've hit one of my hot buttons there Cyndi; irresponsible pet ownership.

More people need to realize that their pets, whether dogs, cats or birds, are social creatures that not only desire but require companionship. I point out often to contemplative dog owners (that simply must have a dog though they don't know why) that dogs are very much like children, except they never grow up.
Just about the worst thing you can do to a dog psychologically is tie them up and leave them alone.
