I think one thing that happens is, people who are moving here check on the internet for places to rent and in those cases, the prices are often very inflated. Then people get the idea that these prices are usual and customary for the area so they agree to a 6 mo or 1 year contract. Some soon find, after arriving, that they got screwed. In our case we had relatives find a place for us and I would say we have a reasonable rent, not cheap or outlandishly high.

Hi Dave...I been following your thread. I'm coming to Duma on 27th from Thailand..looking for a second home. Been to Duma for a few nights 2 months ago and looks promising. So now I come for about a week (flexible)... staying at an Airbnb place near the Airport... rent a bike and go look at areas..., estates etc and see where I might rent a place if I like the area enough.. a week will let me know if it's for me or not.
I have no possessions there so will be easy for me.. I'd be happy to come back after rent month by month till I found the right place in the right area, but maybe not so easy for you.
To me the area is most important... Valencia had a great feel, and I'll be interested in some of the other areas within say 15 kms of Duma, or in town itself.
Not sure if it's an option for you but maybe rent a cheap place on a month by month till you find what and where you want...
Problem with having to do something NOW is you are only able to get a place that is available NOW... and what is available now most of it is what others don't want...
    All the best ..good luck

You can check also the availability of rentals on the several websites like Olx and so on. Good for the first rental.

Hi Andre, I'm sure we have met before albeit very briefly? just over two maybe nearer three months ago we met in Bogarts I was with my then pregnant wife and we talked for 20mins or so, it rained that day and you invited me to move to your table away from the street, you had mentioned then you lived in Thailand but looking for something in Duma area.
Yes I agree you are correct it would be better to rent something short term, but then I have problems with storage for my furniture, I can hang on here where I am and go over myself from time to time and if that is what is required I am prepared to do that, however I do have a few to look at over the next few days when I am there and with the help of a few good people Members from DI, I'm sure it will not take too long, I guess it can be a bit of a struggle totally on your own?

I answered Andre about the very same subject as you can see, but added to that I have a young child now and do not want to subject my wife to extra problems, we have our own furniture and want to remain with it wherever we are,
Thanks for your interest and comments and they are relevant to the situation, but not to mine, on hindsight it is better to rent furnished until you can settle on a place, which I thought we had done in Mactan, but it is not the best place to bring up a child, if you went to the Gaisano Grand Mall near where I live you can see sewage all around it, been like that for years, they are trying to fix it now but have still not cured the problem, the place really stinks, in most other countries would close it down.

Maybe I was a bit harsh to you, I had just returned from the Bar that night when I answered you back, Sorry about that.

I have now managed to find a place in Valencia the contract was signed yesterday and I should be moving here at the end of next month, only minor problem I have now is transport for my furniture but I'm sure that will not be much of a problem for me, it has been relatively easy for me to get what I think is near to the ideal property at the right price and in such a short time, for the most part it has been with the help and advice from some of the members here in DI and as a bonus I have also gained a few friends here. Thanks to all of you who offered the hand of friendship and all the help that has been given to me, also a special Thanks to Liverpool Fan, John.

Hope it works well for you. If not you can always try somewhere different when your contract runs out.

Just for info purposes, when I moved here I rented a bachelor pad where the owner was/is a lawyer and made me sign a one year lease with a one month security deposit. I read the lease thoroughly and it said: (paraphrasing) "In the event the tenant breaks the lease, the security deposit will be applied first to unpaid utility bills and then to repairs and the remainder to rent for breaking the contract". So I rang up utility bills totaling the amount of the security deposit and moved out. I have seen the owner and caretaker many times since then and there is nothing they can do as I voluntarily forfeited my security deposit and moved out before the lease was up.

Tenants do have some rights here so if you find this is not the place for you then its easy to move.

There is a member here that does furniture moving and even has a connection on his truck to plug in your freezer/refrigerator while it is being moved, if you have one. His ID here is "grandpainak" and the company is a real business with insurance etc. Search the site for his ID or the company name. WEDO is the name of the company. No, I get nothing for the recommendation, just trying to help.
