Manila - The fight of President Rodrigo Duterte against illegal drugs and the slow processing of cases lead daily to more and more crowded prisons. - klajoo.com - The prisons of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) were designed for approximately 20,000 inmates, but as of June 2018 were occupied by 144,020 inmates. Seven in ten detainees are being held for illegal drug offenses. BJMP spokesman Inspector Xavier Solda says the prisons are overcrowded at 562.41 percent. Under the Building Act, there should be a total of 4.7 square meters of personal space for each detainee, says Solda, adding that the room is now occupied by five or six inmates. The BJMP's three most overcrowded prisons are Manila City Jail, with 5,878 detainees and a 398 percent overcrowding, Cebu City Jail with 5,070 detainees and 868 percent overcrowding, and Quezon City Jail with 3,778 detainees and overcrowding of 1,248 percent. The BJMP is currently building ten new prison facilities, Solda says, adding that President Duterte had provided PHP 3.5 billion for the construction of the new prisons. The new prisons are located in Alaminos City Jail in Pangasinan, Baliuag Municipal Jail in Bulacan, Davao City Jail in Davao del Sur, Escalante City Jail District in Negros Occidental, Initao Jail District in Misamis Oriental, Lapu-Lapu City Jail in Cebu, Molave Municipal Jail in Zamboanga, Montevista City Jail in Davao del Norte, New Cabagan District Jail in Isabela and the Pagbilao District Jail in Quezon. Won't take long until they allow for privately run prisons and turn it into a profitable business for friends and relatives.

Adopt how they do in some countries in Europe. There factories in the jails, they make furniture, clothes (uniforms), laundry, farming and other kinds of business, most things being produced are being used by the state. Of course, salary is very low, but the inmates are allowed buying food for the money they earn and the state gets cheap labor and same time inmates can learn a craft. Maybe I dream too much lol
