Does anyone know if it is correct that local schools end their term this Friday (14th December) whereas the DepED website lists the end of term as 21st December?
What I did hear from people having kids on elementary schools, today is the last day and start of Xmas holidays. But be not surprised that still differences may occur between one school and another one.
That is the date given in the DepEd website, covering the whole of the Philippines. I could ask why that given date and the actual date most schools finish are not the same, but I have been here long enough to already know the answer.
Perhaps they actually take a serious attitude to education and good for them and good for their students.
Schools are required to have students attend a specified number of days per year. Local weather/emergencies/fiestas/holidays will require make up days. In the US schools have certain months/time periods that are designated as make up days. If there were less days to make up then they get those days off. I know in the US they snatch the majority of those days from Spring/Christmas break. There might be a similar setup in the Philippines that explain the discrepancy of dates.
There is a lot on the DepEd website concerning make-up days but no evidence from a school I am aware of that any attempt is made to make up for losses due to school classrooms being used to accommodate people involved in sports' competitions - instead they are happy to waste days after those earlier losses with teachers' party (try doing it after school), students' party (although this year it was on a weekend) and dancing-dancing-dancing. If you want an educated population to progress your country then try focusing on science and math, for example, instead of singing and dancing.
