I have seen at the Bacong City Engineer's Office (with my OWN eyes), a map of Bacong with the airport outline superimposed, not sure how accurate it still is. All guesses, the airport is about a km from national highway away from the water, parallel to the highway. The land is less than a km wide and is long, maybe a few km long (total is 280 hectares or 2.8 sq km)...Should check the map, i think it's available for public inspection.

I am fairly certain there is NO, ZERO, NADA accurate "updated info." I have personally heard from "connected" local people:
    1. The airport will never be built..
    2. The airport will definitely be built.
    3. No (or very little) LAND ACQUISITION has been done (I think TRUE) (Davy's newspaper article above implies no acquisition has been done.
    4. The land is already in the hands of politicians. They will make a killing.
    5. Landowners will lose their shirts because the government will exercise "eminent domain" to take the land with "..just compensation," which means something different to politicians and to poor landowners...
    6. <GRIN> Davy's newspaper above clears up NOTHING (thanks anyway guy), it only says the docs for a Korean loan have been signed, a fraction of the funds needed. Davy's article above includes 8 column inches (20 cm) on REHABING the Sibulan field.

    OPINIONS
    1. Considering the political situation in Bacong, i would be very hesitant to acquire land there, particularly if near the "airport."
    2. Trying to out-think politicians is a bad idea.
    3. Buying land around the proposed airport is a bad idea.
    4. Buying land 4 km or so up the mountain for a home is an ok idea, land is anywhere from 500P to 3000P per square meter depending on lot size, road access, distance from national highway, desirability, and number of current owners (more than one or two, all alive, is a bad idea). Very doubtful planes would turn up mountain after takeoff...
    5. Doubtful wide-bodies would ever be used for the southern part of Negros Oriental, no matter HOW much the tourism people spend on advertising... Airbus 320's and equiv are the most likely....
    6. I personally think that the land acquisition problem will scuttle the project.

This has been going on for years. I really cannot see them building a new airport when all they have to do is extend the runway a bit more into the sea and purchase the property immediately off the other end to stop the idiotic tall tree problem we had a few years ago. International use is out of the question. Nowhere enough traffic to support when you consider they would have to take passengers who want to go to Europe, Asia, Australia, America etc etc. Just not on. It's pie in the sky, especially when Cebu is so close. But, to modernize the airport would be a good idea, ILS for landings, etc, more night use perhaps.

Philpots is absolutely right, i think i've said that before about sibulan. If you check the newspaper article on page 8, they are already budgeted for an asphalt runway overlay and an expanded terminal ..."...until the new airport is built.

The proposed airport in Bacong is about the same story like the SM mall in Dumaguete. For years I have not seen it happen but all the gossip went on for a long time. Some people even posted the exact location, size and pics of this phantasy mall. Or when the Valencia mayor said many years ago they would build a cable car to the mount Talinis. There are more stories like this. Knowing the Philipiines for a long time I got used to it. Here you have to stick to the "I'll believe it when I see it". Filipinos are dreamers and have a lot of wishful thinking.

Is that what they said about Panglao as well?

I never would have guessed there was enough tourism/demand on that island but I just drove by a brand spankin' new airport there a couple weeks ago.

However, judging from the crowd and some cultural oddities added there I'm not so sure I would want to see a Korean funded airport anywhere near Dumaguete.

For brainless wonders, let's not forget the US State of Alaska's "Bridge to Nowhere," a $398 MILLION bridge ( 21 Billion Pesos) that would have run from Ketchikan's airport to the town, already serviced by a perfectly usable ferry (which i've traveled on a couple times)...

The bridge would have serviced 50 residents on the airport side and some 8000 town residents on the other side, plus about 100,000 air passengers a year (less than 300 a day)... A few hundred thousand tourists arrive by cruise ship but that's already on the town side. The idea finally was killed in 2015. Ideas aren't killed in the Philippines, because people will lose face, but somehow they just seem to disappear from the public consciousness.
