A fellow expat is in siliman and needing one bag of A negative blood tomorrow as needs an operation. Any help would be appreciated.
I went to Silliman right away and they didn't accept me as a donor because I could not tell the family name of the patient to the guy at the blood bank! So he was not able to find out if A neg. blood is needed right now and did not want to accept my blood donation. When I came back home, I instructed my partner, if ever I have to be delivered to hospital, it mustn't be Silliman!
Due to the risk of vCJD there are restrictions on people who have themselves had blood transfusions in certain countries since 1980 or may be a risk (not exactly how that is defined but anyone who lived in a BSE area may be a risk) - and the blood should have the white cells removed. Not sure if that will be done in the Philippines but many potential donors will have lived in a BSE area and so may be risky for vCJD.
Good of you to point this out. For those unaware, this is related to the "Mad Cow Disease" outbreak back then. My gut feeling is that the Philippines probably doesn't ask about this. You're probably at much higher of contracting Malaria or some other disease from a blood transfusion here. However Hong Kong and several western nations DO ask about it. https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/heal...-your-blood-unless-you-lived-europe-1980s-and https://www.redcrossblood.org/donat...habetical/eligibility-reference-material.html
