Foreigners may need a visa before entering the philippines

    MANILA—Foreigners traveling to the Philippines could be required to get a visa should a bill filed by Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri gain traction.

    Senate Bill No. 107, or the Philippine Immigration Act, proposes the creation of a Commission on Immigration that would assess if a foreigner should be allowed to enter the country.

    "The Commission will introduce a visa requirement from foreigners wishing to enter Philippine territory as non-immigrants," Zubiri said in the bill's exploratory note

    First the Senate and relevant committees need to hear, make amendments and vote on the bill. Then the House gets to do the same. Then it goes back to the Senate to vote on the bill with the changes made by the House and on to the president to sign. Many idiotic ideas get put into bills, very few make it through the process. Laws are hard to put in place for a reason. I wouldn't get excited about it until it has been passed down to the house for their amendments and vote.

    And if I all comes true it will be another government department overlapping what another government department is supposed to be doing already..

    If such a bill will ever come into effect, it will surely not increase the number of tourists planning to visit the Phils.

    Yeah. Visas before arrival are already required for people from certain countries in the Philippines. It would be nice to see the bill and not rely on the, many times unreliable, media to tell us what it says. The media regularly stretches the truth to make a more alarming title and article for higher view counts and ad revenue. Nothing new, the media has always done this.

    Exactly. The Philippines has several international reciprocal visa agreements which have been previously ratified by the legislature that could create diplomatic problems, ie, it is more than a simple matter of passing a bill and du30 making a big deal signing it. It could involve actual abrogations of international treaties in some cases. Can they do that? Certainly. WILL they do that? Very unlikely. Political Cost/benefit ratio not very good I suspect. It will create too many diplomatic issues not considered here, I am sure.
