Not all dogs have rabies and rabies vaccines for dogs are FREE.

Rabies IS a big problem and so no point even we dog lovers (in the best possible sense!) put our heads in the sand.

The best process where it is endemic seems to me to be one of vaccination of all dogs (before age 12 weeks I believe) with a chip inserted to prove it, control by keeping dogs within a properly-fenced property and/or on a lead when outside (as Rye83 suggested) and THEN the shooting of dogs running wild. In the long-term, with full vaccination and control, rabies within dogs will be reduced very heavily - but will still remain within other animal species, such as bats.

I know this seems impossible in a country where other rules are not enforced but a person not wearing a crash helmet, for example, is a danger to himself, whereas a person not vaccinating and controlling his dog is a danger to others. I am sure this could be achieved by a country which intends within 10 years to have entered the 'space race'.

Nice sentiments Glenda. You are correct that CONTROL, along with vaccination and chipping, combined with neutering, will make loved dogs secure.

I think 'Liverpool Fan' is making the point that dogs when euthenized properly by a qualified person die peacefully (I know, I have seen it with my own dogs) but dogs poisoned, using who knows what, die a slow and horrible death. He is, I am sure, aware that death is the outcome in both cases.

It is quite easy to decide which method is best as we just have to think which choice OF THE TWO OFFERED ABOVE we would make for ourselves. I'll go for the vet.

Neutered is the way to go as I already mentioned as a part of the solution. Education of the people who have dogs and other animals, of course, enforcement of the laws, it's not allowed to let your dog run free in the surrounding area, and you must have your dog in a leach when you leave your property. Honest, I don't believe in enforcement in the laws in the Philippines, let us be realistic. In an ideal world, dogs would be chipped and vaccinated but that kind of stuff costs money. People throw their puppies and kittens away many can't afford to feed and vaccinate them, that's the reality. My gf feed the street dogs, found some animals lovers, to adopt some of them, most are poor people so we support them with food. You can get dogs and cats neutered and vaccinated free 2 times a year at the vet upstairs the public market in Dumaguete, vet student travel around to different locations and get practice experience, most barangays offer also free vaccination from time to time. Dogs can give you rabies and are dangerous in the traffic, it doesn't allow us to be cruel to them, poison is cruel, everyone who seen a dog suffer that way know it. Humans beings give many more diseases to each other than dogs give to human beings (poison human beings who give sickness to others?). I hate dogs on the road special at night, but I prefer to be attacked by a dog than a Ceres bus or a van with a driver on drugs

Almost half of rabies exposures are among school children.

Dogs ARE the principal cause of animal bites and rabies cases!!

Report stray dogs to the proper authorities. Removing stray dogs is important because they be may be ill or have rabies.

What is your proposal to solve the problem? Tell us something we don't know instead of providing a link we already have read in other places
