Can't we all just get along? I think the answer to this one is "yes", yes, sometimes employees are lazy, sometimes management is incompetent, but sometimes they just can't get things or find it uneconomical to do so and sometimes there are cultural gaps which are getting in the way of communication. Whatever you think is the problem, you are probably right, but you are probably wrong as well.

I think the main problem is accents and they are not familiar with some of the names we use. I used to get very peeved when asking for something, .... say batteries ...... I just picked that to illustrate ......... I would repeat batteries maybe 5 times only to have the girl finally say Oh you want Batteries.... ......... and i would turn to my Filipina wife and say Isn't that what I have been saying all along and she would just frown at me .......

I think you're right, There're more use to a yankee accent rather than Brit or Aussie accent.

I try not to refer to myself as an American or at least I don't say I'm from America. America includes a lot of countries across two continents. You are correct though. I"ll go as far as saying accents in the U.S. is almost equivalent to dialects in the Philippines.

I don't take offense to being called a Yankee when it's not being deployed in a derogatory manor. I think people who grew up in the U.S. south do not consider themselves Yankees.

Obviously the North and South American continents include many countries, how many folks from those countries consider or call themselves American? In the relatively short history of the US there are tons of references to calling ourselves American...the Airman's Creed, Soldier's Creed, Code of Conduct; just a few examples of many.

I have no issues with a choice of someone that prefers to not refer to themselves as American or from America; I do, however, freely say I am American and/or from America or the US.

As for specific accents that are difficult to understand for Filipinos; I doubt that American, Brit or Australian accents (for example) are normally differentiated. Both myself or my wife have been asked where I'm from quite often; no big deal to me. One thing though that I have been accused of is speaking too fast, and I've heard that from many countries I've worked in, especially countries where English is not a first language.

Perhaps it is just nit picky on my part. It is an avoidance on my part t0 prevent anyone from the rest of the Americas from feeling I think I represent or speak for them.

I'm an American certainly is easier to roll of the tongue than I'm a United States of America man . Usually I tell Filipinos I meet, I'm from Chicago.
