Since I cannot seem to find an answer on VA.Gov I thought I would ask it here, does my wife need to have a Social Security Number in order to be listed as a dependent on my disability claim... they approved my son (U.S citizen) but closed the claim without approving my wife and the decision letter could take months to arrive... hence this question

    Thanks

Tax Payer ID should be sufficient. Especially since there is no requirement that I know of to be a US Citizen in order to receive Dependent Indemnity Compensation if warranted like it is to receive Social Security Survivor Benefits.

There are Filipinos that receive benefits that do not have US Social Security numbers.

I guess I was hoping to hear from someone with a Filipina wife who is successfully listed as a dependent on her spouse's VA disability

Dan, just curious. Is the wife new, did you have a previous spouse listed as a Dependent, or is this a first time wife and you were single when you filed your claim?

I called the VA last night after waiting the 10 day period after closure of the claim. It seems that they wanted more information about any past marriages that I had (only one 40 yrs ago) but when I filed the claim for my current wife they only asked for a marriage license. The first rep I talked to would only agree to fax my decision letter and would not discuss my claim over the phone so I agreed to call back after setting up a fax service. When I called back the second rep told me that the decision letter was asking for the above information and would I like her to fill in my answers while we were on the phone, to which I replied "yes please ". I know the first rep was only following procedure but was sure glad the second rep did not... Hopefully all is well now

I wouldn't think she would given that the increase in payment is to you, not her. A marriage license yes to prove dependency but no reason I can see otherwise.

Ok Dan, that was the only thing I could think of that might be holding it up. I had a friend in Bacolod that was facing a similar position. He had to provide information on all previous marriages and terminations before his current wife could be added. At least he would get the back pay at the with spouse rate because of the initial protected filing date.

Hope all comes out well. Good luck.

I added my wife as a dependent online, sent no documents. The next month my VA Compensation was increased to the married rate and has continued ever since.
