Growing banana from seed

it will depend on the variety of banana. plantains have fertile seeds but the commercially grown dessert bananas have been mutated and do not have fertile seeds. propogation is done asexually, vegetatively using the starts or pups from the parent plant..

 

Trying to get a Calamansi Tree to grow on my property but not much luck. Maybe I need to improve the soil to see if that helps . Tough to find that fruit in the states so I want to make sure I have some when I'm in the PI

 

Is the problem getting the seed to germinate or to grow from seedling to mature plant?

Mark...definitely think improving the soil with good compost or vermicompost would help. Especially since you recently built your house the backfill may have not been the best and it takes time for all the critters that help with soil to get established. Vermicompost has worked well for us and is relatively cheap.

Where do you buy your vermicompost? rice hulls? How much do you pay for each?

 

The vermicompost comes from a place called green base, is it just after the airport on the left if you are leaving Dumaguete. 250 peso for a 50 kilo bag...inexpensive in my opinion.

The wife gets rice hulls from a local rice mill in Tanjay, best to ask around in your area. They run 15-20 peso for a bag the size of the vermicompost bags; the place the wife gets them from you need to provide your own bag. So we “recycle” the vermicompost bags.

Kepguy is correct...I knew it was Green something and remembered the bags say Green Base. Not sure about the owner, only dealt with the staff on the dozen or so times I've personally been there.
