I think in the UK some lights are used as junction boxes - meaning that they can be live within the wiring even if switched off. From what I read this is part of electrical wiring and not bad workmanship - but you will know better.

I used an electrician once (UK) who was proud of his 33 years experience - when he left he had wired the cooker switch to the washing machine and vice versa and then a fuse blew in the main fuse box as he did not uprate it when adding appliances! I phoned him to tell him how useless he was but wouldn't have him in the house again.

Whatever, but what I am referring to is here in the Philippines. In England the house wiring ran an earth with the active and neutral. In the Philippines the earth is supplied via the neutral which is grounded. The neutral in England is not grounded.
If you have a washing machine, a dish washer, a wall mounted water heater, a cooking stove with an electric plate, etc, these devices MUST be separately earthed (grounded) using a properly rated wire which is connected to the grounding rod, otherwise you have a potentially very dangerous installation.

    I don't know.
Question. In the two prong outlets where both prongs are the same size, which one is neutral/ground and how do you ensure that the plug is aligned correctly when it can be plugged in either way?

In the US, one is wider than the other so it cannot be reversed.

Correct. I ran a ground wire through the house that connects to a 5 ft ground rod that I drove into the ground near the house. (Looking around I did not find an existing one and the locals were telling me that they only use 12 inch ground rods.) My understanding is that the surge suppressors need a ground to function properly.

Thank you, excellent option but not worth to invest if its for rental property. The entire consumption of energy to run by solar would cost me more or less 5Million pesos. My engineer quoted 350,000pesos for a solar house system (Direct current with Batteries)with 1 AC, 1 Fridge, TV and lights. A property with swimming pool, water pump,3water pressure, 22AC will cost a lot for DC solar with Batteries which is only last to 15-20yrs.
I have 2 small house at the farm installed with solar system for lights and computer/phone charger that cost 32,000 each. For 15 years each house only cost 177/month.
Now for water system with 9Panels and Battery cost me 2,700/month shared by 3 owners and unlimited amount supply.
For my experienced it is worth to investment on Solar system if local electric is not reliable.
Here in Valencia where my home and business at, the current electric interruptions is about 10% per year. If i have complaints and damaged appliances still its still okay rather than spending 5M pesos for converting it to Solar, which i cannot afford to spend at the moment.

I originally thought you were joking and meant 'buy a Sun with its planets' - I suppose that would provide loads of energy, but I see yet another sign age is catching up with me.

With the two pronged appliances there is no connection to the casing of the device so only the innards are live so it doesnt matter. Going back many years this was the norm in England but as the three pronged plugs took over the ground was included as well.

That's what my parents told me - but not until I was grown up and able to cope emotionally (I was about 59).

But I am surprised you (and @Show Pony included for rewarding such insensitivity with a 'funny') would poke fun at me JUST AFTER I had a makeover! Problem is that the hair dye turned my grey hair a bit orange. I was told that if I add bleach and a light, it can do the same to skin (PLEASE do NOT try that at home). .
