We are considering ordering a new electric car from China (see pictures). The max.speed is about 60 km/h, with different power options (e.g. 4 kW). In our view a perfect solution for us to go shopping, etc. The cost is about 220'000 PHP plus transportation and customs/taxes for a brand new unit.

The main issue that makes us hesitant is, we've heard that the process of registering E-vehicles in Dumaguete is very complicated or not even in place yet. Although we know that they do this already in Manila and Cebu. We have contacted an insurance company here, but they are not familiar with this type of vehicles and therefore they are "not sure" whether they can provide insurance for it. 1589118639524.png 1586101043463.png 1588437059562.png

We are wondering if anyone in this forum has experience in registering electric vehicles? If so, it would be highly appreciated to learn from your experiences and to know the facts regarding registering an E-vehicle in Dumaguete. Thank you.

your biggest problem is going to be charging it, a few days of brownout, will take care of all that. Having lived in China for 10 years, I can assure you, you will have grief with it, all parts will have to be sourced from China, and thats when they will screw you, the Chassis and engine will have sub par parts, it will be nothing but a nightmare

These two quotes also apply to the local mechanics and specialized tools.

I read once that electric scooters may be driven without any registration. not sure in how far that applies to cars as well though. You should plan for paying the same as you bought it for in order to get it into the country and out of customs.

But seriously - 60 top speed? hope you dont plan to linger around on the hwy with that. theres already enough slow obstacles around.

How do you pay the P200000 plus shipping and customs?

Here is a way. You are the importer.

Thank you so much guys, for all the info and your opinions regarding E-vehicles. Shout out to "you_have_been_removed" with your 1st hand experience in China regarding this matter, you really made us reconsider our purchase. Payment wouldn't have been a problem in this case but like I mentioned in my original post, in Luzon it may be possible to register but as far as I know they are not ready for E-vehicles yet here in N. O.
I guess we'll have to look for a regular car then.
@Jens K: at least you could have enjoyed the fresh air while trying to overtake me and you would not have to inhale the black smoke of one of those trucks around here. BTW: 10 years ago I used to drive up to 120 km/h on the highway here, but these days I barely get over 60 km/h with my motorbike.

    Well I do...

But sure you're right about the black smoke. Though any halfway modern car you might buy instead will be still fairly clean in that regard.

Can golf carts be made road legal here? I see 4 wheelers running around town looking like they are street legal (plates, brake lights, turn signals). If you are just looking to putt around town maybe that could be an option.

However, parking with a golf cart could prove difficult. Guards are going to tell you the spot is only for cars and motorcycle boys are going to tell you their space is only for motorcycles.

I recently watched a documentary presented by Micheal Moore called "Planet of the Humans" which is a real eye opener on the damage done by the environmental movement, solar panels, bio fuels (burning tress) and electric cars. It was removed from YouTube so it hit a nerve for sure, like so much important info that is censored these days. Might be available on a different platform than YouTube.
I have over 40 years of technical experience with cars, stick with gas or diesel vehicles built by Toyota, Mitsubishi, newer Hyundai and newer Kia.
