There are several usual places that are usually overlooked.

Most common problems with gasoline generators are not following the proper shutdown procedure. When allowing it to run after shutting off the gasoline valve and letting it die will prevent varnish from building up in the residual gasoline which gums up the jets.

On electric start diesel generators the two main areas of trouble are battery and oil pressure. When you turn the key on a electric fuel pump starts and if for some reason leave it on when the diesel is not running you will have a discharged battery the next time you need it.

Batteries most of the time don't require you to relieve much of the compression to get the generator to spin up so you can re-engage the compression to get the motor to fire and pickup the load. If the load is mainly motor or compressors like ACs, freezers or refrigerators which require tremendous startup currents stagger which ones are allowed to start first.

After getting a few of the load to start listen to the generator. If it starts to chug chug it is in an overload and quickly turn off that AC. The smoke from the exhaust will be black in that overload condition and cause the oil in the crankcase to sludge up blocking passages to the oil pressure switch which will shut the diesel down unless it has been bypassed. In the overloaded condition the voltage drops, possibly damaging electronic devices being used.

Been there done that...many times.
