The big problem here is people with a lot bad baggage go and live among the people instead of living in a secure compound where they can not be easily hunted down and murdered.
as far as I know the guy from gie-gies was shot in front of the restaurant. A radio reporter was shot in his car, on Hibbard ave. I think. So unless you plan to never leave the house, it won't help you much if someone's after you.
A secured compound won't help you out much if someone really wants you dead. If you live in a secured compound they will just wait until you leave it. Most assassinations seem to take place on public roads. The best way to avoid getting shot is to not be an @sshole and avoid running a business.
What I've noticed here and in Thailand is that news reports, particularly written media, restrict themselves to known facts - 'man bites dog; dog taken to pet hospital; police looking for suspect' etc. In western media, everything 'juicy' is sensationalised and embellished. Maybe there's a happy medium somewhere!
Reporting on the outcome of a criminal case would be a known fact. I think previous posts referring to cost of journalism are accurate. It simply costs too much to track down the results of legal proceedings. Maybe the court system could start a blotter like the police so that journalists have something they can copy paste.

Of topic a bit but a guy was mentioned on here before and I have just been reading heaps about him as part of a group called Dumaguete City Expats on Facebook. Wilson and Lopez.
