Has anyone thought about using 12 volt to power their modem directly from a battery? Then having a battery charger to charge the battery.

This would be a lot more efficient because there would not be an inverter between the battery and the modem.

The modems are usually 12 volt dc powered by a transformer that plugs into the 220 vac wall socket.

I used to do that long ago when powering my radio. Absolutely correct, it is much more efficient for equipment that can run directly off the battery. The best inverters are 80% efficient so right there you lose 20%. When I did it I had a battery charger and auto type lead acid battery both from Sears; I was afraid of the battery gassing during charge of fast so I moved it into the garage and ran wire from the garage which became our DC supply. The ups i

Note that many DC appliances are rated 13.8 VDC and a few fall out at 12V. It is really the same thing as a UPS without the converter to higher voltage AC in the final stage.

I should add that a deep cycle type lead acid battery should be used. The automotive starter type batteries will fail quickly when being used for sustained loads.

    That's a d*mn good idea.

    Just some random thoughts.
a 10 watt solar panel should produce about 800 ma at 12 volt???
a 40 amp hour battery might be okay with a float charge of 800 ma????
I don't know if there is a curve available for solar panel voltage vs load impedance???

    a 40 amp hour battery should store about (12v x 40amp hours) = 480 watt hours
480 watt hours divided by a 30 watt load = 16 hours of internet.

Tomorrow I might haul out the solar panel that is sitting in garage and doing nothing and make some voltage and current measurements.
Does anyone know off hand the voltage input for a Filproducts router?

Yep. My Sky cable modem is 12v 1A as well. That is only 12 watts.

Well that's good news a 40 amp hour battery worth about 4000 pesos would run your internet for 40 hours, more or less. This is inspiring. Tomorrow I will haul out the solar panel and find out how much current it will send into a fully charged battery.
Another random thought a 200 peso voltage regulator from a motorcycle might do the trick limiting the voltage to the battery.

The next time NGCP takes down their high voltage line for maintenance we can all complain about NorecoII (LOL).

I have a 12v deep cycle lead acid 120 AH hooked up to an inverter. I only use it for my modem I may hook up a solar panel and a MPPT solar charger. At the moment I just charge the battery up with a 12v car charger. I have another inverter 24v pure sine wave but need 2x batteries wired in series, that inverter has a charger inside.

I would be careful using a normal lead acid battery charger on a deep cycle battery.
My friend installed a deep cycle battery in his farm tractor. That fried his alternator, twice.
